The 'Black and Blue' LR3 build

Anyone-

Can i replace the LR3 core without removing the gantry off the side plates? Can i remove and replace just by removing the bearing bolts on the core?

Getting some unacceptable wobble artifacts due to the crack on this latest batch, and Im wondering if i can do a quick replacement to get these finished this week. Otherwise Im waiting for a quiet day next week to do a bigger overhaul which pushes me too close to the deadline

thanks

also- the thermoplastic looked like crap. Gave the engraving a ā€œhammered enamelā€ look that i heavily dislike

Yes you can. Done it many times

Yes. :slightly_smiling_face:

Awesome. It’s running right now, but I think I can see where I take off the top two bearings and it should cant forward and drop off, right?

Taking it off takes 5 minutes so you still have nearly a full afternoon left.

Don’t forget to loosen the belt first. :yum:

Yes. Worse case if its too tight you can take off the outer bottom bearings as well. But I have only needed to take the top off if memory serves me correctly

I have literally 8 of this order left to complete, for delivery in April. I might replace it over the next day, and test. Im also going to laser an acrylic router template jig, just for piece of mind. Client is thinking of extending order for another year.

Thinking about it- should I do the LR4 build instead of replacing the core? i have the hardware, would need to print the parts. I have maybe 4 weeks window to build and test.

yeah, its definitely not too tight

Theres a 1/16’ wide, 3" crack in the back i filled with superglue a couple months back, intending to fix it. I printed the core, vener got round to installing it.

Im almost tempted to film the removal to see if it falls apart as I remove it, lol

This is what I would do if it were me. I tore down and rebuilt into LR4 in about 2 days. In between building Customer LR4’s.

LR3 is a great machine no doubt. But the LR4 is a for sure upgrade!

I’ve cracked 2 LR3 cores like that and both stayed together even after removal and beating the bolts and such out of it lol. They just wont hold steady on the rails anymore after cracking. Both of mine we believe were due to over tightening the router mount.

FWIW I have purposely overtightened the router on my current LR4 just to see if it is susceptible to the same cracking. So far its holding great! BUT my core is printed from PET-CF so I cant say for sure if it would be the same for PLA

Wait- you’re that Jonathan Jones?

Love the fact you build these for other people. Reducing the barrier to entry even further

Done. Think I’m going to do it. I’ll order filament today and get the parts going over the weekend. I got a flashforge AD5 specifically for making lr4 parts, but ive been making life size trex skulls and mark V dive helmets, lol

over-tightening the mount was definitely what did it. Early on I was experimenting with various laser mounts, and made a remix that ended up slightly off center on the holes and I accidentally cranked it down until I heard a crack .

most of the parts and all the conduit is reused, am i remembering correctly?

Depends on if that is a good thing or not…

Thanks! I really enjoy building them. Not everyone enjoys the build process like I do so its nice to see those people be able to still enjoy this great machine!

Awesome! I think you will enjoy the upgrade for sure! I know a lot of people here on the forum have enjoyed that printer. Glad its working well for you. I went the QiDi route and have zero complaints

Oh wow! I never heard the crack but for sure saw what it does lol. Every time I would adjust the core to tighten it back to the rails it would only stay for a little bit then right back loose again. Was extremely frustrating until I finally took it off and found the crack.

Screws/bolts/bearings/motors/endstops yes. Conduit no. The LR4 stepped up to 1" EMT which is a lot stiffer. Ryan has a cheap upgrade kit as well for the added M3 screws and Aluminum XZ plates.

Yeah, I got the upgrade kit as soon as I saw it, a couple months back

Now- where I ended up putting it, and where it’s right now is not something I currently know

I understand this more than I would like to admit

Crisis averted lol.

Not saying I wasn’t just panicking for a minute, but all good now

And this is what’s I’m dealing with, lol

Core swap on LR3 is fast, just loosen/remove top bearings…

Some people just man handle force the Core off/on without loosening. I don’t know if that’s recommended though :man_shrugging:

Love the hexagon pockets, what bit(s) are you using? They look really clean cut to me.
