Those of us that are local could help with this. Perhaps set up a screen made out of EMT (How freaking suiting is that for the lowrider/MPCNC booth ).
Then after the show take it away. Bring it back next year. Repeat.

MPPS (Mostly printed projector screen) by V1E
An extended relative is an electrician. He built a fairly nice EMT frame for a backyard projector setup. The frame has tarp clips all around it, and it captures a large white bedsheet (California king?). It works pretty well.
Hosts backyard movie nights regularly.
Projector would be hard in there. Too bright.
Itās bright and shallow. Plus the distance between the desk and the wall is where I sit.
A lot of them had similar stands with big roll out posters. That is definitely eye catchy. And I bet it would be net positive. But I think there is a little bit lost. Your brand is (to me) a scrappy company in a garage making do. The key thing is to have a way to see it from far away. Making it look expensive is a different goal.
Thatās a bit harsh! (Iāve seen the video of the bolt counting machine!)
I think the brand is about providing brilliant service (and product) to a scrappy community in garages making do. Big posters or photo-banners are not stupidly expensive, can be used again, and if anyone wants help with the pre-production stage Iām happy to lend a hand.
But I agree entirely with your sentiment - the message should not be about being expensive or even perfect, because that is not a terribly appealing proposition to the scruffy hordes!
I am sure I have mentioned this before, but when I was involved in the wooden boat building community, we tended to shy away from exhibiting perfect boats at shows, because they were seen as āuntouchableā (āI could never do thatā) instead less than perfect boats attracted close attention and gave potential customers a lot of confidence.
These two photos give me never ending joy and in a most peculiar way capture the spirit of what we are about I think. My wife sent them to their parents after a gingerbread house building session with our then 8 year old grandchildren, with the simple description āNailed it!ā And they had!
You get me!
It is an odd juxtaposition sitting next to a 90ās jet ski in the garage. Both covered in moving blankets to keep the CNC debris off.
I worried a little when I wrote that. But it isnāt a negative to me. It isnāt a limitation on V1, it means V1 is more agile, more likely to do the right thing, less likely to ignore the community, more likely to grow, more likely to be honestā¦
V1 doesnāt have a marketing agency. Your friends arenāt buying $2599 V1 handbags. There is something ācoolā about being a bit rag-tag. Not in a fake way. Just saying there is an opportunity cost for crossing over into the fancy high polish brand land.
I donāt know what that means for your sign though. Would your shop sign hang up high and get power? Is that too much to worry about on top of the other projects? Should we buy a dot matrix printer and make a banner with some ascii clip art? Or should we just set the ZXY to rainbow and let it suck people in?
Scrappy company with low-cost machines does not mean those machines donāt produce awesome output.
Can you make a sign from wooden slats that fold up into a small space? That kind of thing you canāt buy from a printing company, and it would really stand out at plastic-fest.
Uh, I propose black walnut with a red heart inlay.
I saw this in 1982 (photo stolen from the internet) during my first visit to the Pompidou Centre (not my photo) and have been wanting to make something like it ever since. Watch this space for thatā¦
V1 logo would be very cool in
black walnut with a red heart inlay.
.
Or just white plastic.
That might be cool. Some sort of lightweight sign that assembles, CNC cut of course. 3D would be nice.
I have all this pvc set left over from the van build, waiting for a rainy dayā¦.
Today we will have around 150 mm of rain by this afternoon, but I have a plane to catch!
If someone can get me a Print Shop disk Iāve got an Apple2e and an Image Writer. Just say the word!
Okay I have the tables picked (same place as last year), and my room booked. Flights and a car are next.
I am starting to think about projects already.
If you are coming, try to think of something fun to make with one of your machines to bring, or good pictures, or short video clips to add to a playlist.
We can get an official list of stuff when it gets a little closer.
Just a general question, last year they had the āDeath Racersā, or whatever they were called, event. You made your own remote control 3d printed RC with the āclubā on it. The idea was to āraceā against the other RCs and knock their head off before yours got knocked.
I donāt see that item listed this year. Does anyone have any details of if that is going to happen again this year? and if so how can I get details around printing and electronics?
Thanks,
Philip
I see this in the discord, so I think so. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BaNbt-3H-nc
oh oh! Iām sitting here with the barest hint of my brain thawing - wondering if this opportunity has slippedā¦ again! Weāre keeping our fingers crossed.
A bright projector with lots of lumens can overcome even a brightly lit room. Projectors can be hung overhead, upside down, and can be programmed to flip the image accordingly. The EMT frame could possibly have a protrusion at the top to hold a small āshort throwā projector, without interfering with seating space in the booth. Maybe. ??
