Rocky Mountain RepRap Festival 2024

Feel like I need a new one since you all have seen that one several times.

What do you mean “all”?

Do you think an appropriately dimensioned 2020 extrusion based compact/collapsible machine with controller, hotend, etc… would be permitted as hand luggage? For example looks like sewing machines are permitted.

You could claim it was an emotional support device and they couldn’t refuse!!

I’ve flown with mechanical support equipment made from 2020 extrusions and a hard outer shell, packaged such that it fits in the footprint of the overhead bin. That works. I’ve also flown with pelican cases that fit in the overhead bin.

Probably not an option for you, but I’ve also flown with ticketed (as in we bought a seat for it) flight hardware strapped into a seat in its protective container. That’s a nice way to get some extra elbow room as well, but that’s only worked on airlines not styled in the ryanair/spirit discount model approach.

Edit to add- for overhead bin, it has to fit in the measuring box at the gate, and say below the airline’s weight restrictions for carry-on luggage.

I’ve seen guitars carried on. They don’t fit in the dimensions.

That’s because the owner (thinks he) is a rock star. The lesson is: act like a rock star and bring your machine!!

Hell it seems anything can be claimed “emotional support” anymore! If nothing else put casters and a leash on it. You will be able to take it anywhere in the u.s.!

Booth selection is coming up.

Anyone have any suggestions, I think our last spot was nice. We just about have the pick of the show this time. I liked that we had a large isle, and the space of the door next to us. When it was super crowded that was nice.

There is a second hall now, as well. So even when it is super crowded it probably won’t be as crowded??

Aza There is room near the maker lounge…that might make it easier for you to get a new project signed by everyone.

I don’t have a strong opinion. Most of the outer booths were a similar quality. It was nice to have access to the exterior door. It also felt a little like people were a bit burnt out by the time they reached the back. It was nice to be close to prusa and E3D.

This year the main door is the one near where the cocoa press printer crew was. So closer, right in the middle. Not sure if it was that way last time or the door I came in?? The new building will be furthest from the “main door”.

Not sure if I can share the layout yet. Basically the same as last time same thing in two buildings. Outer big tables and inner maker tables in both sides.

Mainly just trying to stay away from bathrooms, and I prefer the wall. Other than that I don’t mind either.

Should I get a fancy backdrop or stick with the roll up sign?

You have your LED sign. :slightly_smiling_face:

Meduim-to-large screen TV and roll a loop of videos of V1 machines making things?
Put some other stuff on the loop, like @azab2c accelerate MP3DP assembly videos.

I thought the best part of the setup was letting the V1 machines operate and thus show what they do, and the big benefit is then the interaction between makers and the booth representatives.

The enhancements that might be good for 2024 would be to make sure that Ryan can get some time to go walk the floor and have those same interactions with the other groups present.

The show format is such an intense experience, getting adequate mixes of engagement with visitors, downtime, and engagement with other show participants in some kind of sane way would probably help.

Also a reminder that the wifi environment at a big show is essentially a giant denial of service attack, so having machines that can be run by LCD or pendant or host computer is probably a good plan.

It’s also worth showing off Jackpot, this little gem is a great way to update other older machines and is a pretty great value in my opinion.

Love this idea. We could run a small contest and essentially crowd source footage if needed

Aza set up a tablet last time running videos, and I kept that going at Open Sauce and MRRF. It is nice because you have something to point at.

For the wall… Does anyone recall seeing mini/pico projector(s) setup at any of the Maker events? Wondering if that’d be easier to transport than large monitor? Appreciate lighting could be an issue, but modern mini/pico short throw projectors are pretty good these days.

For a projector screen, could pickup some 10’ EMT from local Home Depot / Lowes, assemble screen using some material and preprinted parts, then return EMT when done

fwiw, almost done creating ZoomTube enabled content for my LR3 build, you can watch from 1x to 200x speed, or Plaid speed even, zoom in/out on details, filter, search, bookmark, read related posts, etc…

What’s the largest Zen XY you’ve ever seen?

Ohhhhh, I like projectors.

12 hour playlist here we come.

My table? 3’x5’?? Hard to transport though…

While you blokes have been mucking around with the finer details, I am yet to discover if half a million frequent flyer points will buy a flight window when we need it.

Hopefully we’ll know early next year, and by that I mean by about Wednesday then we’ll frantically set about working out how to fill in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, here’s a clear (if cost free) signal of our intent at least!
