Parametric Fenders for the LR3 now on Printables!

I can’t wait to get a set printed. Unfortunately life and work travel have impacted my shop time. This is awesome! Thank you so much for all the additional work. It “finishes” off a machine so nicely. It will make me re-address my cable management too .

Attached is a zip file containing 45-degree printable clip files for my set (the DougDan Tall YZ Plate version for Hidden Belts Mod):

Peter, I will send you my editable source for these files in a private message. They were created in Fusion 360.

   See, I told you! Thanks so much for this - whenever my Covid brain disappears for a bit I’m so distracted with other things at the moment that I don’t know who I am anyway! I’m sorry to be holding you up.

I am going to add another d20mm or so to the fins just to give a little more leeway with printers that aren’t set up as well as yours and mine may be, but the “snap off” works beautifully.

You’re awesome and not holding me up. I’m just trying to help lighten the load.

That sounds great. I just completed a print of the first one, and the break-away fin does break off wonderfully.

Two tips for printing success with models like these diagonal clips that are tall and have a smallish footprint:

  1. A mist of hair spray on the print bed helps with adhesion.

  2. Printing only one item at a time reduces chances of the print head knocking an item loose from its footing on the bed. Most modern slicers, when slicing for only one item, minimize travel moves outside the item, as that would require travel moves back into the item’s profile, and those “enter the profile” moves are the ones that can bump a part loose from the bed.

Both are good tips and while I agree with 2) above, and I think the hairspray tip is fine in some circumstances, I would not see that as a substitute for a finely tuned first layer or scrupulously clean print bed.

I would not have expected a problem printing this on my Prusa Mk3/3s, and I confess that the Mk4 has made be so careless in terms of tuning my models that it seems to take care of everything (WITH A SCRUPULOUSLY CLEAN BED) (I presume the new bamus and others with first layer levelling tech would be fine too) so I do value the experience of others with different technology.

Having said that, I’ve been experimenting a bit with ridiculous overhangs and small bed contact of late and have been surprised at just how far you can push them.

On bed cleaning - there’s no substitute for lots of green washing up detergent, some hot water and a clean microfibre cloth followed up with a liberal dose of IPA and a paper towel.

Be aware also that the paper towel has sufficient abrasive quality to invisibly scuff your bed surface with a subsequent increase in adhesion!

There’s often more than one way to accomplish the goal!

Woohoo! Been waiting eagerly for these!

Thank you Peter!

Love the cable trays too.

Everything in PETG. I did lose a few tabs but everything still holds solidly. Might reprint with Doug’s 45 degree action.

Posted my makes on printables.

My LR3 is finally “done” for now! Letting the chips fly in celebration…

Thanks,
Will (Printbird on Printables)

NICE!

The 45 degree idea is from @bitingmidge! I simply did a remix of the clips he designed for me, that implemented his idea!

Fabulous, and thanks for posting the “make” too! I was surprised at how brittle the PETG was when I was mucking around.

If you wait a couple of days (Tuesday?) I will have the 45° clips on Printables - I would really love to get your reaction on how they go in PETG. Or you don’t want to wait, you can just slice the bottom off them, add a brim and organic supports as shown somewhere above - waiting will be less stressful!

I know I’ve lived with mine for a year, but I am so happy to see them just working on other machines!

LowRider 4 coming in three days. :stuck_out_tongue: :joy: Can’t let you finish a machine and actually use it!

I’m not scared! I’ve probably sketched dozens if not hundreds of various methods of construction and fixing before developing this one, including dozens for the LR2 which of course didn’t get installed.

I am pretty sure that I can rise to the challenge, but maybe in a week!

@DougJoseph Are your modded versions available anywhere? I can’t wait to print some PeterPanels with (Design8)StudioShrouds. :grinning:

Seriously, thank you both for all this work.

Ahh sorry, I’ve been holding things up a bit - will be clear to upload on Wednesday I think. (If I can’t get to it tomorrow)

As Peter alluded, I’ve been waiting for his remix of his own set (i.e. for tall YZ plates) so I can post my remix of his remix!

Thanks for the update! I appreciate you both.
