It’s probably a similar amount of waste if you buy stacked rough sawn wood really. Except that you can’t burn the purge block, or use it for compost, and as you’ve explained, it’s a worst case, some of it could have been used in infill or in another model.
If I was going to produce a few of these, I’d think about a “lego” style or even a simple block set that could be produced, or some other toy which requires many multiples, so that I could have at least some use from the waste.
But that 3€ worth of waste hurts me so much, I really would spend the extra $6,500AUD on an XL, and then not print multi colour stuff anyway.

Are you saying the purge tower could be something functional? I am sure there are a bunch of designs that could be useful after they were printed as a purge tower. Does the tower have extrusion issues?
I print a lot of little bins when I’m trying to get rid of plastic. Things like the gridfinity boxes. It would be nice if you would convert 80% of the purge tower waste to a gridfinity bin or something.

You could convert it to a bin, pretty sure about that.
Different topic: Even if I didn’t want to print different colours I’d have bought the MMU, after having used it. The fact that it unloads the filament after a print saves me so much time if I decide to use another colour or another material. I can just start and it’s going to use the right colour/material (limited to five, but still great).
As @Tokoloshe says- “wipe to object” will do that, but you can also purge to infill ( and support I thinkif you have a suitable model.

Our little unplanned, consolation journey to Sydney today took us to the Australian Manufacturing Week exhibition - where lots of cool things were seen. Prusa had a stand there, there first in Aus, and I have to say the MMU looks very slick - the XL even more so. My beloved is treating the XL as though it is a foregone conclusion, I am thinking subject to @Tokoloshe 's long term testing, the MMU could be a nice compromise!
Now it may be because the grumpy kids don’t get the airline tickets but the Prusa team were a lovely bunch of folk to hang out with for a bit, I am really looking forward to the meetup tomorrow night, a small consolation for not being at RMRRF.
Oh, and I am now the proud recipient of a Printables “Blue Tick”

Regarding the MMU: I think if you are invested in printing as a hobby it’s well worth it, but I am pretty sure not everyone would be getting their money‘s worth. My lazy ass would have basically bought it even if it could just have changed the filament for me after every print (not quite, but you get what I mean). If you expect multicolour wonders in the same time that normal prints are done, it’s a rough awakening.
Comparing the XL to the MMU is something that definitely has to be done. Since I am quite keen on combining TPU and PLA, if I can’t get it working I am definitely considering saving for a XL (though that would take me at least until the XL 2 is out…
). I really don’t need it, but I want to be able to do it. ![]()

I am thinking about buying a used Prusa MK3s+? Mainly to print PETG?

Whether it’s a “good buy” will be up to you and the price you pay I guess. I would happily buy one new and think I’d done well - if all is well it should be ultra reliable.
My Mk3s performed flawlessly for more than 4000 hours, then I dismantled it enough to lube the bearings, and gave it a general check over, and it has behaved “like new” in the hands of my grandson for another thousand hours or so thus far.
Use the Prusa textured sheet for petg, adjust the first layer using live adjust Z and it’s pretty much set and forget until you make a change. Other machines will do the same I’m sure, but might take a lot more setting up or looking after.

I have made a note to service my machines more regularly! It’s not that bad - checks and rod lubrication did happen often.
Is it just me, or has anyone else with a Mk$ noticed that since the latest firmware update, there are hardly any little filament tits left on the build plate after levelling?
I wonder if it’s something to do with the new “ramming” retraction routine?
Yes, but for me it is the case because with the MMU the filament gets only loaded after doing the leveling. ![]()

Yeah well, I just printed a plastic scraper then realised I didn’t need it! I’ve seen some speed figures re the MMU - very impressive!

I’ll watch out for that - it’s so cold here that I didn’t need to turn on the vent fan in the printer enclosure - with the doors open and no fan on, it barely got above 32! ![]()
