Minnetonka, Minnesota Primo Build

Looks really great, I am pretty sure you’ll have one happy customer. :tada:

I am glad to see that not only my inlays don’t fit a 100% :yum: I also know from experience that you aren’t going to see it with the naked eye.

Well, I made a mistake in the Vectric Inlay settings, So I had to make several attempts to dial in the inlay plug to fit correctly in the inlay carve on the board.

I wanted to use a tapered ball nose endmill to get a “deeper” or thicker inlay…but I had cut out the cutting board (negative) where I had the “include angle” set to the ball nose (SINGLE) angle setting of 4.82 degrees.

Vectric won’t let you use a ball nose as a V-bit so you need to change its “Type” to v-bit in Vectric… but Vectric Settings for a “V-bit” use the measurement of its “Include angle” which is 2 times the single angle degrees listed by the ball nose bit mfr.

So I had to adjust the plug depth to very shallow in order for it to be wide enough to fill the negative in the board.

The inlay depth was 8 mm but I had to make the plug depth only 1.5mm.

I’ve corrected the setting now so on my next board I’ll see if these “correct” settings yield a better fit without making a bunch of test cuts.

Cool, thanks for the explanation, that makes sense. I am using the cheapo Estlcam cheats, because I could not justify to spend 700€ for Vectric.
Can it do inlays now automatically or do you still have to cheat with the stepdown etc?

You still need to “massage” the settings to dial them in. But I’ve only done a few inlays so far. I’m guessing the “pros” have the settings dialed in and just rinse and repeat depending on the type of inlay and wood species etc.

@nviseon Phil, your cutting board inlays are awesome! As someone who came to the debugging party late, what was it that fixed all your problems? Can you post a little summary? I tried to read the whole thread but I guess i missed it.

I have one of the “early” Jackpot boards and Those of us with the “early” Jackpot boards needed to add a 4k resistor to either the jackpot board or to the esp32 board.

Once I did this, all the movement issues disappeared because the jackpot sent the correct voltage to the stepper motors through the stepper drivers.

There were other issues related to the Fluid Dial and wiring but I presume you are referring to the major issues that involved the stepper motors and drivers.

Dovetail miter splines are a pain in the butt to make. Not going to do that again “willingly”

That looks amazing!

thanks

Here are the latest two cutting boards for a past client of mine.

He has one of these on display in his showroom and gave one to a good customer of his.

Hopefully, some of his other customers will want one. That’s the goal!

Here is the design for my next cutting board.

This one is for my son Arlo, who will be a senior at Emerson in Boston studying to be a filmmaker.

It’s his design, so this one will be very rewarding to build:

I’m excited to use a new wood, White Wenge, for the Unicorn, Stars, & Moon

The design looks great, but wenge, at least the dark one, is pretty unhealthy as far as I know, did you consider maple?

He wants a contrast between the Unicorn from the Tree (the tree is in Maple)

I’ll research white wenge to see if it’s suitable for cutting boards.

If not, I’ll need to find another wood species that is lighter than maple.

Ok a quick search online confirms what you are mentioning. I was aware of the potential irritant for some woods to (sawdust) but not specific to just exposure. Considering the cutting board will be well (cut) I’ll find another solution.

Maybe white oak?

Also I can use white Hard maple for the horse and I have some OLD Growth 1930’s maple wood floor boards that have a much more amber yellowish appearance so I could use that for the tree.

Thanks for the comment and suggestions. Nice to know people are looking out for each other.

Hmm, the tree loos rather brownish on the pictures and the maple I use is really white. Maybe there’s a difference between European and American Maple?

White Oak is also nice. You could also use Ash for the tree, if you find one with a dark core, you will have a tree with a really nice grain (like San’s hair) and it would have a different colour than the unicorn. The fur San is wearing is also the same maple again.

I really only know it because Cutting it Close is now offering Wenge Inlays and someone commented on it, saying it might be problematic. San’s board also has Wenge in it (the dark strips on the sides) because I didn’t know better, but it’s luckily on the sides and not in the cutting area.
