Hmm, the tree loos rather brownish on the pictures and the maple I use is really white. Maybe there’s a difference between European and American Maple?
White Oak is also nice. You could also use Ash for the tree, if you find one with a dark core, you will have a tree with a really nice grain (like San’s hair) and it would have a different colour than the unicorn. The fur San is wearing is also the same maple again. 
I really only know it because Cutting it Close is now offering Wenge Inlays and someone commented on it, saying it might be problematic. San’s board also has Wenge in it (the dark strips on the sides) because I didn’t know better, but it’s luckily on the sides and not in the cutting area.
