LR4 - Ghostrider B2/RC2

That is nice and deep what is it? 60 vbit?

30°. Bought it for those kind of slender fonts.

We can conclude: 6mm DOC, 3000mm/min and 16000rpm with a 6mm endmill does not work in beech (aka damn that shit hard) wood.

It did work with 2000mm/min and 24000rpm though, still faster than the LR3. Had to make a second version.

Do you hear it skip or does it just go the wrong way?

It’s so fast and so loud it just goes wherever.

I am a little surprised it can’t handle that. Have you messed with your accelerations or anything beyond stock settings? Faster makes it more likely to skip when changing directions.

It’s one of the hardest woods I’ve got. I am not surprised, to be honest. Might have to buy a new endmill after 3 years, maybe that’s it.
With the LR3 I went more slowly even with beech and not 6mm but 3mm deep mostly.

You have been using the same endmill for so long? :o A sharp bit makes a lot of difference.

It’s a 25€ HSS endmill. Should still be good. Though I might have hit it with a monkey wrench to get it out of the Makita’s collet years ago… :expressionless:

Research indicates it should be long dead. Further research to follow.

they can be reground, but hss cannot be done in a machine with coolant, so may be expensive to regrind.

Okay, it wasn’t HSS, my translation was lacking, it was VHM (Vollhartmetall), so even harder. Nevertheless it seems that a) the wood I was cutting is Leimholz (glued wood), so it is a lot harder to machine and I never went that fast in this type of wood, only “normal” wood and b) with my 3 years of use I really might be way over it. I don’t know how much I’ve used it, but with all those panels for the box etc. it might well be 20 hours. So I guess I got to order a new one and check.

Makes sense  I use a carbide end mill for around 15 hours

Ghostrider ghosting some Star Wars coasters.

I know this is extremely childish, but I need to smile every time I turn off the light to leave the shop. Makes me really, really happy. A lot cooler with the dust shoe (which works great, thanks Ryan) now.

Being happy keeps you a child at heart, and you’ll never truly be old if you’re happy at heart.

I think Ghostrider is awesome, and every time I see pictures of it with the lights out, it makes me happy.
