much appreciated!
I notice now after posting that it says 17mm max cutting depth but I am 99% sure I have used them on 19-20mm stuff before.
But you can always get something like these Amazon Bits. These show a 22mm cut depth. I am sure they aren’t as good of quality as what Ryan sells, but the price is cheap so just change them out more often lol.
i buy the 10 packs from a company named HQMASTER with great success, just dont get too crazy with the speeds. (i mostly cut acm and pvc)
thats great been looking on amazon (canada) and haven’t found much with good ratings. I’ll try importing these and give them a shot. Something about metal spinning at high RPM doesn’t give me the greatest confidence but these seem to have a high rating.
ha! exactly. Amazon seems to have transitioned to the temu/ali express of questionable goods.
While i got a bunch of you guys on, what do you use for a spoilboard leveling bit? 1/4" shank i’m assuming with an 1" cut surface?
sad but true, the ones that Jonathan linked to you and the ones i use works as good as any other, (i just copied the amana tools profile for my vectric software and edited down some speeds. i use 1.5mm single spiral and 1/8" dual flute spirals (i use the chipload i can control my rpms by software–Spindle with vfd–)
Think Ryan and several others like 1/2" dovetail.
Easier to tram (good enough) and go fast than using larger surfacing bit.
much appreciated! I actually already have that bit i believe.
Please note that Ryan was testing aluminum. The dovetail should and will work for surfacing the spoilboard also but the settings are going to be some what different.
i would prefer to use a 25.4mm (1") 24mm or 3/4" 3 flute surfacing bit with a short length.

I buy bits from Ryan most of thr time, but have found a few decent knes on Amazon as well, particularly for deeper cuts. Ryan’s are good for about 5/8" / 15mm maybe, if you’re careful. (I’ve also made some pretty impressive smoke when the collet touched some walnut, so be careful!) Mostly I stick to 1/2" with those bits.
SpeTool Extra Long CNC Spiral… Amazon.ca
That’s a good long cutting bit, 1/4" shank, cuts through Ikeaboard.

These arent great, frankly, but are good for 3/4"/18mm material, which makes them useful.
Sorry to hear that, hope you are keeping warm! Thanks for the info this is great.
Nothing against the bits i bought from Ryan. I’m an IDIOT is what happened that i didn’t notice the cut face is only 14mm and not the full length of the helix on the bits i have (which is what i measured first). All learning for me here! Much frustration but feeling good about being able to quickly figure out what my issues are. While frustrating and a waste of material i’ve learned so much in the last two days.
I’ll try the cheap ones you recommend (highly rated and i’m sure its the same ones Jonathan recommended but don’t have to import).
Looking good!
I always say I’m going to put something similar to this on a t-shirt.
Hey i was just listening to the news. Soon Canada will be U.S. (@@@@ sorry no politics, bahaha) but just think, postage will be cheap!
