LR4 Build - Alberta, Canada

I’ve wanted a CNC for years. When i happily stumbled across v1e’s LR4 build on Printables.com I was like a kid in a candy store and immediately began reading the forum, the assembly instructions and started planning my build.

So far I’ve gotten the X gantry assembled and temp wired. Looking for solutions right now for table/initial cuts for struts. Likely will do something temp on the garage floor utilizing some unistrut I plan to pick up this week that will for the future Y rail/belt support system for both min and max sides. Just have to figure out how to secure to the floor to avoid movement of frame and cut surface (thinking a good floor scrub and some double sided tape i use for wood working templates)

For those interesting here are some photos of the progression:

Printed on my MK4 with partially assembled MMU3 (MK4S upgrade kit ordered):

Printed using PETG with recommended fills, found print volume was only about 2.3 kg versus the noted 2.7kg, excluding the mess on the X beam braces (see note at the bottom on high flow nozzles and first layer speed). Printed 3 layers on vertical walls on all parts.

Printed TPU for the first time! What a great product, not sure why i was nervous about printing with it!

Not sure how my wife felt about me stealing the dining room table but it was a nice work surface!

Moved out to the shop:

Lesson’s Learned So Far:

  1. Don’t be afraid of TPU although its a bit “fun” to load into a printer with tubing (remove the tubing if you can on your setup).
  2. First time using a larger nozzles (such as 0.6mm nozzle suggested). Slow down the first print layer (i found 80% worked) on faster printers such as the MK4 or this would result on the beam brace parts for example. Not all parts had this problem but i found the the braces and temp struts had print quality issues on first layer if it wasn’t slowed to 80% of typical print.

Also for those first starting out and it looking overwhelming here is a quick summary of the parts, qty, and which parts work well on accent.

One of us, one of us!

Is that the Prusa Enclosure? Are you happy with it? Wife is nagging me to get one because she does not like the smell of the prints. Does it eliminate those?

Man, I totally feel you. It was the same for me a few years back with the Burly/Primo. This community is extra awesome, you are going to love it here.

Where about’s in Alberta are you? I’ve got a couple Lr3 builds in my shop near Calgary and am thinking about doing an Lr4 I could show you my setup if you’re looking for ideas

Thanks for the message,

It is the prusa enclosure! I’m constantly moding it to allow for easier access, it is a bit of a pain when you need to do maintenance but it does eliminate most print smells even without the filtration running.

I live in the deep south of Calgary so might take you up on that! Thanks for the offer!

I remember when Midnapore was outside the city limits (showing my age…)

When I moved to Calgary Spruce Meadows was still out of town. I am in Queensland I have a Primo that’s running but it is being replaced with an LR 4. Have not decided if the promo will go laser or if will it be cannibalized for a printer.

Ahh… Hi from the “other” Queensland!

Your Queensland is probably a lot warmer than mine

Bigger too!

Time for an update. And wow so many fellow Calgarians !!

So after much over thought… This is definitely the sketchiest thing I’ve ever done, but hoping to get strut plates cut tonight or possibly tomorrow…

Also, does anyone know if the 24V blower that Ryan sells plugs into the jackpot controller anywhere? Otherwise I’ll build power distribution for controller, blower and undermount LED lighting.

Also probably 40’ of double sided wood tape holding it to the floor before someone asks

It doesn’t. I just cut the end off, strip back some wire and put it in with the power supply to the jackpot. I have also used Wago connectors to bring the power into, then jumper out to the board, and hook up the fan and undermount LEDs

Looking great! Nice that you have enough flat room to do that!

What @Jonathjon said is what I was going to say, exactly.

Thanks gents! Worth while to fuse any or each of the circuits? What does the Jackpot have for over current protection?

I do have her moving and homing! You have no idea how excited i am right now. Time to square!

Sacrifices! But means i’ll be scraping the frost off the windshield of my car tomorrow morning before heading to the office. Thought about setting up something temporary on my table saw outfeed table but decided against that as flattening that would be rough.

Or at least former Calgarians…

It even has pockets for the screws, so it actually nearly belongs into the “fancy” category.

Also a (north side) Calgarian here… upgrading my V2 to a V4 !
