Kobalt router

They clear em out, so much for our warrranty!

I will have to reach out and see if they can tell me anything.

For $59 it is worth it to grab one if you are on the fence.

I ran mine for 30 minutes the other day. still cool to the touch on the body. My Makita was almost burning me after 10.

Happy I switched

Holy crap!

Me too.

That would be a bummer!

Yep. Or if you were debating upgrading to an IDEX.

I wonder if there’s a revision coming or if they’ve decided not to keep carrying them.
It’ll be curious what they say.

My Makita is still running strong, but I just accidentally ordered a Kobalt. :grimacing:

I only get down to the States after new year. Hope I can still snag one!

(A long time ago I bought a Makita to play with and returned it. I still have that DW660 that I haven’t figured out a use for…)

The kobalt on the MPCNC in my “shop” has more than 10 hours on mine and it just ran a couple more hours today surfacing a piece of walnut. No complaints. There have been a couple reports of speed controller failure, but that is a warranty issue and it shows up immediately, so you swap it out. If I didn’t have 4 routers already, I’d buy another for $60. I like the kobalt. Mostly the light on it.

I was just wondering if the lower bearings look like it can handle the loads placed on it?

Wow! Might have to check the price match policy if the in-store price is the same.

Or maybe wait until June and see if it drops to $9.

Wow, great price, guessing not a good sign for the product?

Created an outrageous thumbnail for the outrageously low price.

Was hoping to see this product do well.

They’ll be required to offer something sense they won’t be closing kobalt the brand if they are scrapping the project. However this would be a really short product test run. And in my experience kobalt keeps a lot of products they release.

My guess if anything they are redesigning the box or something and are dumping it as a end of year sale

OK, that price is just amazingly low for this product. I just ordered a backup / possible future gift. They threw in free standard shipping!!!

Wow, thought I got a deal when it was $80. Haven’t gotten far enough in the build to run it yet but hoping by the end of this week I’m cutting!

The warranty on these cheap appliances are just exchanges and if not that, refunds. You’ll get a store credit for what you paid.

That said, I am not convinced this means anything w.r.t. the longevity of these routers. Kobalt is an in store brand. They should be cheaper than a dewalt or makita at steady state. The features we convinced them to work on (ER11, heat, etc) don’t contribute to the cost long term. So even though they are a better router for us, doesn’t mean they will sell millions more to weekend warriors trying to finish their bathroom. Not to mention, increased volume could mean lower production costs. Maybe now they have sold enough to invest in a cheaper process.

Is it bad that I haven’t even opened the box on mine yet?

Too many projects.

I have a failed DeWalt (probably needs brushes, but I went and got a new one), and always wished those had a speed control.

At $60, seems like there is no downside to the Kobalt. My local Lowes had 4 in stock yesterday.

In general, I don’t buy Kobalt but made an exception.

With no load on a level 4 or so for speed, is it normal to have what I can only describe as a “surging” affect of it trying to find the right speed? Google say’s it’s normal for variable speed routers but wasn’t sure if it was the same experience as others are having. No issues after 10-20 seconds of no load or after making contact with the work piece.

I had that issue with mine. I first tried running it for a while to wear in the brushes.

After getting 20-30 minutes of runtime on it without correcting itself, I decided to exchange mine, and the new one did not have an issue.

I don’t know if “an issue” or not, but I didn’t like it

Agreed. Some need to break in some are bad. Run it for a while.
