Jackpot to FluidDial Pendant - wireless connection via ESP-NOW

Yes, it is working on the CYD. The battery level doesn’t show. I looked at Fig’s github and saw he has a LiPo battery in the case plugged directly into the CYD. It doesn’t show the level for a battery plugged into USB. Changing it so when the dial stops rotating cancels the jog is an interesting idea.

Thanks

That’s how I’d expect a joystick to work but I’m not sure about a dial.

It used to continue jogging. Now it stops when the wheel stops.

Yes, I was able (in testing on m5dial) to fake what the battery gauge looked like, but the direct wiring of the battery (not just running on USB power plugged into a battery) must be the thing that makes it appear.

Hmm… this may have something to do with a failsafe I added in case during jogging a disconnect happens, unless they did this on purpose for your CYD?

On the m5dial I can, for example, click 100’s place 3 times and the machine will jog accordingly to 300. I’ll double check that I didn’t break my failsafe code with the new merge from main.

Oh no, this was a change Fig made in the main FluidDial branch. I didn’t mean to say it was something you did.

Sorry for the confusion

Yes, there is now a “pairing” (user doesn’t see anything) that happens– basically the controller and the pendant establish a reliable Unicast connection (ack/ retry.) If you wander too far away it will let you know N/C and re-establish that link when back in range.

I will tackle the scenario of multiple controllers and multiple pendants next. Probably have the pendant, when it sees multiple controllers respond to broadcast, have the user pick one or the other (then the pendant will get assigned an ID from that controller and stored in nonvolatile storage… will play around with it.)

For now, though, you basically just turn it on and it works, zero config. Note that this is “instead” of the FluidDial wifi stuff, as they both use the radio, so will have to figure out how that all fits together. I would assume someone will choose ESP-NOW version OR Wifi version of FluidDial and web install that. FluidNC (controller) supports “all the things” on my fork simultaneously, as demo’d by Britt above, you can be connected to WebUI over Wifi and the ESP-NOW coexists (as well as UART…)

Noticing some odd behavior around Hold during a run, so be aware that this is still a work in progress!

(Update- fixed Hold behavior and some other state/jog fixes, so if you’re testing this you’ll definitely want the latest push to both Coinbird/FluidDial and Coinbird/FluidNC.)

Good news - Fig (one of the devs on the project) has rolled in ESP-NOW so I’ll probably abandon this proof of concept for now.

Since he did the WiFi integration, the details of the installer etc will be sorted out (someone I wasn’t looking forward to doing)

Similarly his implementation has both FluidDial and FluidNC changes. He uses a pairing mechanism vs. my “zero config” which is probably a better choice in the long run. Looking forward to testing it out!

Thank you again for the work you did on it too.

I tried his earlier version where you had to edit the config file to get it to pair. I didn’t like that so much and saw how it would be hard for new users. Your version just connected and worked.

Mitch told him this new method would be better. I’ll have to try it when I get back home.

Thanks - it was a fun thing to play with! I was mainly curious if ESP-NOW would even work alongside Wifi or if it would hijack the entire radio, and was pleasantly surprised to see they did indeed work together! I hope implements the broadcast mode for “read-only” devices similar to how I did it, so I’ll keep an eye on that. I’ve been using my version for a few weeks without issue now, so at least I got some mileage out of it.

Me too. I’ve used yours on my JP2 and the FoamRipper to cut out DollarTree foamboard planes and gliders.

I wish I could wrap my head around OnShape and/or FreeCad to add a battery slot to the CYD case. I have a battery for recharging a phone that powers the CYD pendant. I have 2. One uses Bart’s case and one uses Ryan’s.

I saw that Figamore made a case that incorporates a AA size LiPo battery to power the CYD pendant.

I installed Figamore’s ESP-NOW on my CYDs and Jackpots. After installing I kept getting an error that the Jackpot couldn’t read my SD card. It took me at least an hour to figure it out. You had me change

stepping:
  engine: I2S_STATIC
to
stepping:
  engine: I2S

That doesn’t work with his version. Once I changed mine back to I2S_STATIC it started reading the SD card again.

Just an FYI incase someone else did this too.

Are you guys referring to this value?

Mine is empty:

Regards

No, you don’t have to change anything with the new ESP-NOW implementation in FluidNC 4.0.4.

4.0.4 has issues, I had a job freeze up. There’s a 4.0.5-pre4 build that should fix it. 4.0.3 fixed the freeze for me but has no pendant esp-now support. (Not related to anything in my experimental version as discussed above in this thread)

Mitch has done a lot of fixes for both the webui, SD card reader and ESP-Now in the 4.0.5 branch.

I just updated to 4.10 and MillMage is working now!
