two flute endmills in wood typically do not have large enough flutes for chip ejection at the RPM we run. Big heavy steel cnc machines use two flute or more for metals with smaller chips than wood and spindles that spin much slower.

Check this out.
Much better chip thickness, 30mm/s a 6.5mmDOC, makita dial on ~4.5. Moving real good now. I think that is pretty good, the accuracy is still there, I can see a faint step-down line only on one face, even after a full depth finishing pass. So I think that is probably good enough, and maybe I should back down a hair or speed up the router a bit.
Now you are getting there. I think I usually run around 40mm/s and 6mm doc for 1/4” 3-4mm doc for 1/8” The LR4 is capable of a LOT more speed than the 3 was, but still not enough for 2 flute endmills I think
For instance, I run at about 1200 RPM using a 1/4" 4-flute end mill when cutting aluminum on my Bridgeport. Sometimes slower if I feel like cranking the table slower.
So, when are you releasing that project?
When it’s fully built, if it works as expected. Each new part I cut I tweak the cad if needed and recut. Almost there.
Im in the need of a full size workbench
Have you considered (when you have it sorted) using the same basic documents for a 3/4 and half size? Since it’s pretty modular it wouldn’t be too difficult I assume?
I think this design is best for full sized. If I were to do a 1/4 sheet version I think I would make it different, probably all-in-one as well, including a new surface and rails. Probably have the user start by using a full sheet on the floor and make a full table and rails that way.
This is kinda parametric but I realized I made the tabs funky halfway through so some of it does not translate well if it moves too much.
Slowly getting there. I am going to change up the drawers a little bit.
The tabs and slots are a pain in CAD but assembly is a breeze. There are no screws or glue yet and it is rock solid.
Need to figure out what surfaces are getting painted. I think maybe just the two outside faces (not cut yet) and the inside of the drawers, then leave the rest.
You’re Making great progress.
You get to live with that project file if you release it so be sure you’re satisfied with anything you find “funky”.
I’m super excited to see how it all turns out.
I need to work more with OSB.
That looks excellent! I’m a huge fan of tab and slot construction.
Knock knock, any more progress? Will the top be osb also?
C’mon, it’s the weekend. Give the guy a break. ![]()
Yeah, sorry. I usually don’t touch this stuff much on Sundays. I did make some cuts on Saturday though.
It sat just fine on the two small runners under the bottom, then the side just snapped on. There are probably too many tabs for the top but whatever each one only adds a minute of cut time.
I hope to make the last three major cuts in just a bit, then figure out the drawers later after I paint and assemble this thing.
The new workbench is impressive….but dayum what about the floor in your garage?? Its nicer than the floor in parts of my house! ![]()
can we maybe ban people for tricking others into clicking links which lead to backstreet boys youtube video? ![]()
Okay, no tricks this time - this is the link to the best song of the Backstreet Boys:
Thanks, it makes working out here pretty nice. Before I moved in I had them done…after I spent 3 days scraping all sorts of glue and carpet off of them and doing my best to degrease. I actually just did recess lighting and ceiling fans as well.
Cutting the Top now, that is the last large piece, then just drawers left.
I think I am painting the outside faces of the sides black and the center rib. …maybe all the inner cut edges as well. Try to look like I care but not going for a huge painting project for a table that goes under my other table.
Edit…White, I have lots of white here. If it sucks, I will repaint it.
How has it been working with OSB? Did you decide on 1/2”? Have you had tear out? Any learnings?
Is it coming together as something that feels like it will last? Have you come up with anything to treat the edges to protect anything exposed?
Awesome so far.
