Best 3D printer I ever *bought* is also best deal + Klipper thoughts (Flashforge AD5M)

Green on black, that looks good :100:

I concur — sharp looking rig!

Doug, question on your enclosure. I couldn’t find exactly what all needs to print? Is that new low slung spool holder needing to be printed separately from the main listing of the enclosure? Is there anything else? Regarding the filament sensor mounts, if using the low slung version, only print the ones from the low slung holder listing? Sorry, new to this. Thanks.

The original DIY enclosure included a high mounted spool holder at the back. There were issues with reaching it and also issues with getting filament fed in through the runout sensor. I first developed both a remixed mount for the runout sensor and a side mounted spool holder. But at that point my side mounted spool holder was held by only one screw. Then I remixed the sensor mount to add a place for a second screw, and remixed the (still high) side mounted spool holder to use two screws, and around the same time, made four cosmetic variations: OG, hexagons, circles, and solid. Then someone remixed my side mounted one to get low slung. Then I remixed theirs to make it print without supports, and thus I added a fifth option - low slung.

Regarding what all to print, there’s some help in the OrcaSlicer .3mf setup file included with the minimal enclosure, which includes pretty much everything except the new fifth option (low slung), and (I think) does not include the printable drag chain mainly because most folks are buying the kit from Flashforge that includes an injection molded drag chain. There is a printable drag chain in the files offered by Flashforge for the OG enclosure.

Okay, thanks. I don’t see a kit from FF that includes an injection molded drag chain.

I did ultimately find a drag chain from the designer INQUE on the FF site, but I don’t even understand the drag chain. It’s not included with AD5M, but is required for enclosure or is it just optional?

I think any kit purchased from Flashforge now is going to come with a drag chain. However, in the event that it doesn’t the printable one definitely works, as I have it on at least one or two of my three.

One of the key reasons for adding an enclosure is that some filaments (other than PLA), require an elevated temperature inside an enclosure, and this includes not only needing to be able to have windows and a door, but also a lid.

For PLA you definitely want to leave the lid off, and maybe even have the front door open if there are lots of long bridges or overhangs. But for some other filaments, you want that thing locked down tight.

The key with the drag chain, is that it allows you to change the direction of the PTFE tube from being vertical like a McDonald’s arch to being horizontal so that a lid can be put on.

Understanding the minimal enclosure is much easier if you watch the video on how to install the original enclosure. If you have not watched it yet, it is on YouTube, and I think I even included it in the description of the minimal enclosure. It’s very short, but watching it be installed is a good prep for understanding how to install the minimal.

The kit I bought from FlashForge included the drag chain and injection molded mounts.

After printing the rest of the enclosure, I decided the drag chain was a net negative and I went back to not using it (the cables fit nicely in my enclosure).

Ah, I see. You need the kit anyways for enclosure since it has panels, screws, etc. I found here on Amazon from FF store for $40. Still debating on which printer to buy, so if I get the AD5M, perhaps I’ll just see if I want to add this enclosure. Thanks.

@MakerJim is ever more open minded about things. The PTFE tube has some stiffness to it.

Because I have a business account on Amazon, as of a day or two ago I had a lower price on the AD5M than people without a business account had access to, and yet I also had access to the $100 off coupon that everyone else had access to. Bottom line was that for me it was 295 before the coupon and 195 after the coupon. If you want to get that one using my price, I could maybe arrange for you to pay for me ordering it for you - drop-ship style.
