Now your just mean teasing us like that. Lol
Is the zenXY v3 using 2020 extrusions?
I call dibs on a hardware kit. ![]()
2020 v-wheel extrusions
I’m sensing a Christmas present in our household…(maybe…).
I’m curious about power needs - could a zen XY be powered by a (say Ryobi -18v) standard battery? I’m just looking at simple charging that doesn’t need my intervention.
Yes, but you need a battery that is self-monitoring. I did kill a cordless tool battery because it let itself get fully discharged.
That’s interesting - I have been guilty of occasionally running the tool to a stop - I suspect there’s a monitor in the tool
Low voltage cutoff is 20c on Ali Express. (the link probably won’t work because it thinks I’m in Belgium)
I will keep thinking!
yup I ended up with a few of those little cutoff devices. I will prevent making expensive mistakes again. I assumed the battery was smart, not the tool… an expensive assumption.
an buck converter to 12v. i have been using a 5volt one for some usb tests
The power requirements are very small. I would be tempted to get a USBC PD breakout and a battery bank.
Something like these (but I haven’t tested these ones specifically):
I’m taking this thread too far off.topic now I think, so will save all my questions until that time next month when I am not living on a small boat, but today I am reading up on PD thingoes! Thanks!
Tool batteries are all over the place. The Ryobis that I use have the BMS in the battery. Most early DeWalt have the cutoff in the tool, but some newer ones have a BMS in the battery. Harbor Freight Bauer have it in the tool, but Hercules has a BMS in the battery.
Running the small LowRider 4 at SMRRF 26, we started on one fresh battery and then swapped to a second 4Ah Ryobi battery once during each day of the show and that worked fine. I brought two batteries and a device charger that can both charge the battery and supply a load. It was a travel battery bank while I was travelling and I only used it to charge tablets at the show and then to recharge the batteries overnight.
I see they now have a higher-power version of that, this reply will probably cost me money in a few minutes
.
I may do this in future builds. Note that you can find 65 watt USB-C PD adapters that are safe for 24V inputs and will do 20V output to the load. These have shown up because many OTR and commercial vehicles are now running 24V electrical systems. One of those will happily exist at the output of a tool battery.
It’s probably more effective, though, if you’re running a controller like a Jackpot that is 24V safe to just wire up a tool battery with a BMS straight to the Jackpot input with perhaps a fuse inline.
I’m also playing with some holders with ideal diodes to join up multiple tool batteries.
Dang! I’m happy to pay the five bucks of course, but I like the anonymity that I think being a supporter on Printables gives me (Did I just out myself?
)
Ryan - super excited about v3. Any ETA on when we can get our hands on the final plans?
Ryan was involved in another project so the v3 was pushed back as far as I know. ![]()
I have been doing at least one task on this per day. So it is still moving. The CAD has been printed out, built and tested so that should be good. Currently working on the BOM section of the shop and docs. A lot of the basic build instructions are done with CAD exploded views so I just need to screen grab and organize them.
I will put up a basic calc, then when the rest of the docs are done I can come back and look at a fancy one for those that do not want to use the parametric CAD.
So…ummm, I am pretty close but as always the docs will be a work in progress for a little while. Maybe next week.
I am actually also kinda waiting for the fluidnc 4.1 fix as well. I spent a lot of time with that yesterday.
You’re Amazing. Thanks man.
