I assume that the amperage to the motors is correct,

Use M503 or M906 to check.

do I need to get into the code, adjust, recompile and flash the SKR?

Yes and no. Editing and compiling is one way (the hard way) to modify the Motor Current.
M906 to set (M500 to save) from the Terminal is the easy way.

SKR default is 900mA (I believe), you shouldn’t exceed much more than 950-1000mA or you can melt the printed motor housings (maintain motor temp < 50 C)
