I just looked at the updated listing, and I counted the LR3 shown in 2 photos, and one is the LR3 all by itself! Cool.

speaking of Idex for mpcnc.

I actually printed a second core to put opposite the first on my mpcnc so it could run double tools and make it so I really would never have to tool change, but realized there isn’t enough workspace with the area lost with 2 of them mounted. I’d have to pull the octopus off the 3d printer and put the skr in that and then figure out the second z axis gcode cam use as well… it was a fun idea, but not one I’m going to complete at the moment since I need it to work.

Well - must be selling OK, it’s out of stock!

I see some new-in-box on other sites; I read above and it sounds like the first-batch issue you mentioned only affected one router? I’m just trying to ascertain if an ebay copy is likely to be part of a batch that got rejected, or just a present/gift/etc that was never used. Any concerns?

Unfortunately, it is discontinued as a Kobalt product. There is a chance it gets picked up by another brand but feels like it might has passed that window as well.

oh, bummer. If I buy one 2nd hand, besides not having warranty, am I out anything besides one 3dprinted part to replace it down the line?

I have 2 Kobalt routers and they both have the surging issue at certain RPM settings. At this point, I’d go with something else.

Oh, that’s a bummer. I was thinking about buying 2 of them, same price new off ebay as one of the makita/dewalt. The largest draw was the collet. I have a little-used bosch pr20, but it’s much higher min speed (16k) - I assume that’s too high for this use, even with single-flute.

Regarding the surge - would you mind summarizing what the problem is? Did this develop over time, or was it present from the get-go? Is it easy to test for if I find one locally?

Thanks @jeyeager & thanks for the project @vicious1 I can’t wait …

Well, I tried to take a video but ironically, it wasnt too bad. It just doesnt maintain the set RPM and you can hear it go higher and lower. For me, it mostly happens around settings 2 to 4. I have it set at 1 most of the time where it isnt a problem. I guess it hasnt really been a problem even while surging. It has done this from the start.

Given the price, the Kobalt may still be an ok choice. I only bought the second one because it was so cheap.

If I end up replacing it, I’d probably go for the Makita or this:

I have 3 Kobalt routers. 2 of those have surging problems right out of the box. The speed varies.
I tried running them in for 10 minutes or so, didn’t help.
One of those will get torn down at some point to try and figure out why it is happening.

I have not opened the 3rd box yet.

That’s specifically why I bought the 2nd and 3rd. One was at a marked down price, one was off the clearance shelf for less than you can ebay a collet by itself.
