I’m thinking about building a full 8×4 LowRider CNC, but because of the space I have available I’m wondering if it’s possible to mount it vertically against a wall instead of using it flat.
Has anyone here actually done this? If so, how did it work out? I’m mainly interested in whether it causes any issues with accuracy, wear, or reliability over time. My main use would just be cutting 15 mm birch plywood.
If anyone has photos, build logs, or anything else that could point me in the right direction, I’d really appreciate it.
Welcome to the fun! I have seen a few people build rotating tables for similar reasons. So, it is horizontal when in use and vertical when not.
Some people also remove the Lowrider from the table and store it separately to free up space. So, I believe there are a few space saving options that may fit your needs. Best of luck!

As well has anyone created an cad assembly (possibly for freecad) for the lowrider v4
If so I can take a look at solving the issues we have as I do part/product manufacturing, design and engineering and it would be a great help to review it and I may be able to contribute to creating it vertically
The whole machine is designed around that constraint. An example is the Y axis rails are free running on the surface of the table and the belts only provide motion control along the axis vector.
Tip it sideways and that fails.
Similar with cutting forces on Z
You could re-design the various pieces to work differently.
Do you think just redesigning the Y runner and tube mount so it’s like a c around the tube with bearings/wheels and make the supports slimmer will work and if not how come?
Or, change EMT angle if always using at an incline, and/or add another EMT rail (and rollers) if planning to use both horizontally and some what inclined.
Consider building a stock version, get it running, get some usage to help discover/learn things… Like, LR3 is good up until ~30 degrees, maybe.
I like the idea of a some what vertical LR4, but requires bunch of changes I’ve not seen anyone brave enough to invest time experimenting and having a go
OSHA ladder angle of 75 degrees would be perfect for a few reasons when you start to think about how the LR “table” could now also be storage rack you’re also able to climb…
I had a similar question about mounting lowrider at an angle when i was looking at building the lowrider ( i built 3) and I have a first gen maslow. Without serious modification, like changing the x motor if the gantry is tilted would be a major undertaking.
The maslow can work for you depending on what you are doing. Because they are gravity driven down, in order to get correct output in the lower corners, it must cut both slow and shallow. I fold mine up over my car when not in use. If i want precision, i use the lowrider. If it is bigger stuff i use the maslow, but i dont trust the full size of the maslow and it really is slow. Sometimes the sled moving on top of the workpiece is nice and other times it is bad, but it really depends on what the project is. I wont cut cabinets on the maslow. Lettering and other things not requiring accuracy like names or cutouts work awesome on it, unless they are foam and then the sled sometimes hangs up on it.
