Trying to flash the firmware onto the rambo v1.4 with a MAC

I downloaded repetier host, and put all the settings in from the v1engineering website, but repetier host keeps telling me that there are 5 commands waiting, but I don’t know what they are. Also there is no manual control tab

I am Mac user with platform.io and Atom but I’ve never used a Rambo, mostly SKR boards.
My Burly has an Archim board but never got Repetier to work correctly with it.

Eventually I got the Archim working with using the v1pi image on a Raspberry pi.

The most important ones are the baud rate, and selecting the right com port.

Does that work, can you provide a screenshot so we can make sure it looks right?

I don’t know whether the Mac installer works the same way, but the default Windows install process puts in both Repetier Host and Repetier Server, and Server tends to monopolize the communication to the device. On Windows, you end up having to de-install Repetier Server so that Host can connect.

It’s worse than that. Server grabs the port, and won’t let anything talk to it. You have to uninstall it to let anything talk to the port.

So, I am trying Xloader on a windows machine, and it says uploading, but it is taking ages, does any one know how long it should take to upload it?

I timed it when I first used it. I believe it took 20 to 30 seconds.

Yeah, it has been like half an hour and it still just says uploading

I tried it again, and it just freezes

Should I keep trying or give up and use the FTDI board

So, I tried using Arduino on my Mac, then platformIo, and then Xloader on a windows, all of which did not work. On the windows when I connected the USB, it recognized the device (The device in this case is the Rambo). But, when I ran Xloader it, would just freeze and not do anything. What should I think of this? Should the recognization mean that the usb works?

I’m sorry this is so hard. It is rare for people to struggle as much as you have. First, you did have the 12V to the board before you ran XLoader? Did you select your hex file from your drive? And you did select the right board in XLoader before you attempted the upload? And was there in message in XLoader? The message would be displayed at the bottom of the the XLoader screen. Did you select the correct COM port in XLoader? The screen should look like the following but the COM port might need be a different number and the hex file will be a different location. You can click on the dropdown to see what COM ports are active.

XLoaderInterface

If it is all good with the above questions, then you are getting to the point where it is highly likely you damaged your board when you applied 12V to the 5V rail. If so, you could try the FTDI board and see what happens. If it is okay to install some software on the Windows machine, the only other thing you might do is to install Repetier-Host, and give it a try.

So, I did everything you just mentioned, and the screen looked like the one that you show me except the bottom part where it says bytes uploaded. The com port was right, the baud rate also and the file and the device. So, how do I transfer the firmware to the board with a usb stick? That is what I want to try now, because it could be the program.

A USB stick does not help nor work in the way you imagine. I mentioned a USB drive as a way to run XLoader without needing to copy anything to the Windows machine. I imagined you borrowing a friend’s machine or were using one at the library and might not want to install something on a machine you did not own. If you did not need to install anything for the test, I imagined more people would be willing to lend you their machine.

Some control boards like the SKR Pro do allow you to insert an SD card to upload the firmware, but the Rambo control board does not have an SD card slot (the one on the display does not count). You must use an external program to transfer the firmware to the board. XLoader and PlatformIO are the only two ways I know to get the Marlin firmware on the board.

It is looking likely that the board is damaged. If you want to continue with this board, the next things you might try.

  1. Make sure you’ve tried a new USB cable
  2. As mentioned in my previous post, try Repetier-Host instead of XLoader to connect to the board
  3. The FDTI board

So, today I talked to a specialist, and he told me that most likely where I plugged in the power burnt a crusial part for transering data. So he recommended I just buy a new board. So, I did, but thank you everyone for your help and support.

The specialist is probably right. If you are up for it, the FTDI board gets around the most likely part you burned out. It would be an interesting test to see if it would work.

I’m sure a new board with be a good solution. You have a lot of hours and frustration trying to get this one working. Maybe we will see your build in the “Your Builds” section of the forum.
