Back would be the +Y direction or underneath the gantry
Front would be the -Y direction or farthest away from core/gantry
Left would be -X direction or the non rail side
Right would be +X direction or the rail side
I meant when you say
“X0: tram in front 1.88mm away (size of touch plate)
X0: tram in back 3.1mm away”
So at X0, where exactly are you measuring 1.88mm, and where exactly are you measuring 3.1mm?
Are you measuring from the front tube bottom, and the printed part bottom on the back? Is the front and back of the core? Front and back of a particular bit?
I’m looking for the frame of reference for where those measurements or coming from. Maybe I missed it in the thread above, but I’m just not sure how to process those heights
Oh okay sorry. I am measuring from the router bit in the tram arm I printed. 1.88mm away from my 3d printed glass bed. This is constant cause it is the distance of my touch plate so for easy math sense we can make those zero
X0 the back or +Y is +1.22mm above the glass bed
X1200 the back is 2.08mm below the glass (I had to raise Z axis to get bit to graze glass)
Is this Ryan’s printed arm? Or a different one.
I ask because for the ones that slip over the collet, I found it very easy for me to have it installed where it was actually not completely perpendicular to the tool.
A very slight variation at the collet gets multiplied out at the end of the arm.
Is this possibly a bent rail? I remember reading on one of the things that if you over tighten the core you can possibly bend the rail. I do know after I got my struts on and was moving the machine around discovering my awful spoilboard that the bottom of the core what just tight enough it was causing some slight (and I mean slight) shaking as it went across so I loosened it a half turn or so and that fix the issue. I’m going to check my bottom rail with my digital calipers
I’ve been sitting trying to think of what could cause this…
Bent rail is one of the possibilities. I don’t know how much it would have to be bent to throw it off.
Does the front/back “twist” measurement happen regardless of where you are in Y?
Is it the same at Ymax, Ymin, and somewhere in the middle?
Maybe I found something? The bottom X rail has a thickness difference. The first 200mm of rail is .2mm thicker than the rest of either rail (23.5-23.7 vs 23.3-23.5)
This wouldn’t be caused by the core and is likely something about this rail specifically. But would a .2mm deviation cause my issue? And if it was why would it effect the entire x axis and not just the first 200mm?
The lr3 is current off its table and on my workbench so I have a flat surface to work with. Let me try moving it on a different spot on the workbench (I swear if my workbench isn’t flat)
That’s probably getting beyond what I can help you with ![]()
Although I’d be surprised if slight thickness deviations would cause a big issue since a lot of us are running on galvanized electrical conduit, and I can’t imagine those things have that tight of tolerances on the O.D.
Yeah that’s my thought process to. The whole top one deviates .2 the bottom one is just .2 bigger with the same deviance for the first 200mm
Also can confirm the result stay the same front back and sideways on my table.
I do have one more inkling on what it maybe but I haven’t mentioned it cause A) don’t this it applies twist to the frame and B) it only has a 2mm difference which I don’t think could apply enough change but we are out of avenues I think. Anyways my yz brace on the 1200 side had the corner pull off the print bed when printing. The good side is 13mm out from the first x axis brace the bad side is 11mm. Thoughts?
Also am I just chasing zeros? Would I even notice a ~2mm canter at 8 inches across 1200mm
2mm over 8in (200 mm) is 1%.
1% of a 6.35mm is 0.0635mm. Or 0.0025 in. 2.5 thou.
Seems pretty small to me. Especially in a natural material like wood.
So, Jeffe’s saying that while you might struggle to win competitive inlay, intarsia, or marquetry trophies, you should be good for “honey-dew”, dorm, and shower gifts. Probably even a decent Etsy storefront, should your personality/desires lean that way.
Some new info. Worked really hard on getting spoil board more flat. Went got another mdf sheet (much better this time. 3 mm out in some areas. Currently trying to surface and going to figure out the ridges later.
But new info. Left side (X0) has a ridge every 2 cuts that I am not able to feel. Right side has ridges every cut that you can feel but I can’t seem to measure yet (any ideas here?) the middle is a hybrid. It’s every two cuts and you can feel them, doesn’t feel any bigger/smaller than the right side
Starting new thread with new issues to refresh everything
