competition???
If this is what you were talking about @Tokoloshe I sure hope so. Have a spot open just for this to nominate!
Today I’ve tested aluminum milling on my LR3, and it’s ready for cut the side plates of the V4, The jackpot and 10v spindle I/O module are on their way to be delivered(ordered from Elecrow, I live in EU).
I found 30mm tubes in a shop next to my home.
I’m designing a new table, with enclosure, and all the electronics inside, because the first LR4 will be a small one (400x400) only for aluminum milling.
After that one I’ll upgrade my bigger LR3 that i use mostly for wood.
I’m impatient
Where do you get aluminum for milling, always wanted to try!
If you have a metal supply store nearby, you can likely get offcuts, often called “drops”, at a discount. If you don’t have a store like that, Amazon is an option. Here’s the listing I bought recently:
You can also check for fabricators welders and engineers near you, visit them with cash (and optional but recommended- a packet of biscuits/snackbars) and ask if you can get some drops or offcuts.
I’m about to do the very same thing later today, I’ll let you know how I get on
Hello Joseph, can you tell me the dimensions of the aluminum plate. I still have some lying around but I suspect that they are a bit too small. I could then order new ones in the meantime.
Two sets of XZ plates for the LR4 can be fit easily onto a 12" x 12" piece of aluminum. One set can easily be fit onto a 12" x 6" piece of aluminum.
For testing purposes I use scrap pieces gived to me by a friend. For small quantities I use Amazon or Ebay, is not the cheapest, but is fast and in small pieces. Usually the stores in my area sell only thin plates or profiles.
The amazon seller I use is “Full Armour”
Now I have a 200x200x6mm plate, Is it enough for both, maybe with a tight fit?
Will there be a 32mm pipe version of the LR4?
Seems like it’s already one of the choices.
Mine is 32mm as well.
How thick?
Results of todays scavenging:
2 bits of 10mm Aluminium (it was either that or 5mm) for tenbux
Edit: tenbux and a packet of Halloween cake bars.
Smaller one is 180x140 which hopefully is big enough for one plate, if not there’s definitely room for 2 in the bigger one.
Annoyingly he had offcuts of 5mm that were like 1400mm which I’m guessing is juuust too short for a full sheet build.
48.5" Usable X may, or may not, need 1399.65mm Pipe/Strut length… Hopefully Ryan’s able to confirm numbers soon to help folks gather scraps/materials.
Hopefully. And fingers crossed they’ll still be there when I go back.
Edited - I started to say, but I was miscalculating the mm to inch conversion.
1/4” or relatively close to it.
