Space mouse v2 DIY

Probably depends on where you live
In France, prices are similar to what Doug stated above

Then again, if you want it to be a cheap project, just buy on ali via the slow boat, and it’s probably around 8-10$ for everything you need

I see this more as an experiment, and a way to test the spacemouse navigation for myself
I’d hate to pay 200$ just to realize I don’t like the way it works and/or I have no use for it…

The quick glimpse I had with this cheap device only pushes me to buy a real one

I like the second one

How’s the weight on it?

As tall as it is. His first design with hand rest makes moer sense, doesn’t it?

Yea, but this way someone can design a nice wooden hand rest we can cut out on a CNC.

Ummm… I’m just going to walk away, and pretend I didn’t see this question. We’re still a family-friendly board, right? :japanese_goblin:

Whatever knob you’re using, I think the box is too tall
The Arduino sits under the joysticks and I think it could be optimized easily

The knobs themselves are hollow, so they’re very light
The base I still need to put some ballast in it to weight it down

Don’t know what you mean by gesture
If you think about holding down a Key/button and making a specific motion to trigger an action/macro, the spacemouse software doesn’t have anything like this

That was what I was thinking about, you move the mouse in a circle and it saves a file or you move in a different way and something else happens.

I did source the parts from the slowboat and when thinking about cost vs time the slowboat is ok.

Since I only have the printed parts right now, how does it feel in your hand? Is is accurate?

Maybe you could post a video of it in action?

I’ll try to make a video

Most of the time, it feels precise, but I sometime feel it lacks sensitivity
Overall twisting (rotate) is the most problematic, and zooming (push down or pull up) sometimes interfere with other movements

It’s hard to tell if it’s hardware or software related - or just me being not accustomed enough yet…

Ok. Maybe it’s the “joysticks” that limit the sensitivity? Perhaps magnets could be used in some way?

EDIT: Seems like someone already tried

I’ve seen this one and it looks pretty cool
It still uses keyboard and mouse commands though, which I think is pretty limiting… but that’s just a software update after all…

Talking about “cheap” alternative, just the springs were already more than the whole “space mushroom” BOM
I think it’s probably a better way to do a spacemouse though…

As i said earlier, I see this as a fun project, and also a way to see if I actually have a use for a spacemouse…
Maybe after trying this one I’ll build one with magnets, or just buy the real thing…

I mean there are a few opportunities on the secondhand market

Man that’s a FANCY one there lol. I just have the standard one, and until about a week ago I didn’t even know it had 2 buttons on it LOL.

I will say it took me a little while to get used to it. And I am still not the best at moving around with it. But I cant stand doing any kind of cad without it now LOL.

When I was at work and had to wait for something, I would practice doing barrel rolls in place on the screen with my part. That takes finesse  . I still only use it for assemblies, very rarely will I use it to just look at a part. When I am in CAD mode I typically have a hand on the keyboard for shortcuts, but during assemblies I am always using it to move and zoom to get the right mate.

I can see mapping my shortcuts and really getting fast with that thing!

See that’s the only way I can move around in there. When I try with the mouse I can never get exactly what I want. Usually end up just quitting or i just deal with whatever view I have and hurry up and get it over with lol.

3d connection has some training stuff on their software for practice with it. And since the “space mushroom” uses their stuff it should work for that as well.

Yeah thats definatly the power user version right there LOL

I haven’t even completed a single assembly yet >_<

Considering I don’t even know what assemblies are in CAD I think what I use it for is awesome lol. Can only imagine if I knew as much as you guys LOL

I just designed my own knob :stuck_out_tongue, therefore I officially beat “Doug the mad modder” in this race  (curious to see what crazy mods he will come up with though ^^)

Also added a bit of lead (3x 40g) to the base and it definitely feels nicer

You finally can clame a California sticker with the added weights :muscle:  sorry. I dont know enough about this to even coment on the build or use. I had never heard of a space mouse till this thread. Does it add to gaming? Or just cad?
