Nice clear instructions on the video Doug!

You should enter it in the printables contest for paper towel holder.

Small suggestion:

Make only one side have a slot for the center axle, the other side as just a round hole. This is how most of the commercial holders are made, and its slightly harder to accidentally bump the whole roll out of the holder, but still reasonably easy to replace the roll.

From using similar holders in the past, the asymmetric design is functionally more secure, particularly at the end of the roll when there isn’t much mass and the rate that the axle rolls at increases. It wants to drive up the side of the holder and it can’t at the captured end.

I actually did enter it. However, I have not read the fine print on the contest concepts, and I tend to think that a solution that requires other materials beyond 3-D printing may not fare well.

This is a great suggestion!

I had considered that if there is any instance of the roller coming out of the holder, that I can simply drill from the outside in through the dowel and run a screw into each end of the dowel from the outside, then when it finally came time to change the roll I would simply need to remove two screws.

I now have this holder hung up vertically.

And now… it could be a single screw.

Yep. It’s a great suggestion. However I’m probably not going to redo it, so the benefit of that will be any others who make it. :grinning:

Also, because that roll is so fat, and the clearance into the holder is so narrow, I would have to check to make sure that the dowel rod could even get inserted into the hole on the one side. I’m guessing that maybe by just simply pushing until the paper towels get deformed, it could be fit.

There isn’t a lot of area topside of the hole, so it shouldn’t be too bad for the shop towels.

True

I read the fine print and it does say that.
But can’t you take those files easy and make a stl.
I am not trying to add to your work load but I meant like if someone wanted to print it it’s possible.

@Waspjr - hey I had not thought of that. I guess I could modify the listing so that it becomes compliant with the fine print.

Why are you cutting it in two programs instead of one?

No real reason. I had started thinking I might use a different bit for two operations, but at some point I decided to use the same one.

You can still use different ones in one program.

I’m aware, but I’ve also had an issue where if the lines of two cuts intersect, then selecting one selects all, and I’m now guessing I may have subconsciously just wanted to not run into that again.

Oh, I know that one… You can fix this if you wanted to by working with layers and hiding those in Estlcam that you don’t want to edit at the time. Took me a while to figure that out. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah, I keep forgetting ESTLcam even has a layers feature, and I have not really bothered with learning much of how to use it.

WHAAT! Estlcam has layers?? That could be helpful…
