Shipping is the worst part

Looks like wind up air raid siren to me.

I just read all of that! Really an unpleasant situation! It’s really unfortunate for entrepreneurs like you! :frowning:

I actually received the shipping notification for my new Jackpot today. I was surprised to see UPS instead of USPS like in the past. Now I understand why!

I feel a bit like a beta tester  (And I’m fine with that!) I’ll keep you updated on my experience!

I have some concerns, but we’ll see. In the past, with other purchases, UPS hasn’t hesitated to add customs fees…

I placed an order with you last year for a similar value, which you shipped via USPS. We’ll be able to compare.

Perfect that is going to be valuable info, thank you!!

and another one…Back from India and looks like it has been sat on.

But how freaking cool it this piece of mail!!!

@Tokoloshe It is amazing in person, such a wonderful gift, thank you so much. I am so excited to show it off at the RMRRF!!

The inlay is so dang tight, I need to try this but that “10”, well that is so perfect it is kind of mind blowing.

I absolutely love the tooling marks though. They let me know a CNC made it.

It has a great smell to it as well, is that the wood of the finish??

I will be putting this on my shelf in the office Luckily I can show off your makers mark and the inlay at the same time.

Thank you so very much.

Happy Birthday V1.

Happy it arrived in one piece.

The smell is probably the wood, the white mineral oil does not really have a smell. Both the walnut and the red heart smell pretty good.

The smell is completely foreign too me but it is fantastic.

That you so much. It is amazing to admire your work up close, I am in awe of your skills with a machine we designed together. What an amazing feeling. I am framing the note as well, what a great addition.

I am on cloud 9.

It was nice to be able to give something back. I also really like the pattern of the pocket, it’s the parallel clearing method as far as I remember.

What really amazes me the most is the accuracy. Did you try turning the lid? It always fits and never wobbles. :slightly_smiling_face:

I was showing my lady that, and even she was impressed!

I don’t know how critical she is, but I’ll take it. Thanks.

Me neither but she was genuinely impressed. It can be hard to impress her with handmade projects sometimes. She just assumes I can make anything she wants. Matter of fact that is a lot of the people I know. Neighbors came over yesterday, “hey we are leaving can you fabricate a exhaust tip for these custom Harley pipes real quick we want to go for a ride”…I am not a magician. I mean maybe I could but I think a lot of people underestimate how hard some things are to make.

Yeah, I know that… my wife: But you can do everything connected to handiwork.

Yes, I can do most things but some things are just not worth it to be doing yourself or I really just can’t.

But we are derailing the thread, though it was about shipping the box to you… :stuck_out_tongue:

Well this answers the question about what happened with my last order. I didnt thj m you’d done anything wrong, it all looked OK, just never left the USA. Second shipment got here fine. Sorry this happened. I felt bad about it.

Yeah, it is odd, what ever is going on. I’m glad it got there, eventually. From here on out it should just keep getting better for international shipments.

I appreciate this is a serious issue with genuine business implications but I will see your USPS and raise you Australia Post which is so much hot garbage that they have had to reduce delivery to every second day instead of daily for 98% of locations across the country to remain “profitable”.

That is an idea I actually really like. I bet it is better for the CO2 output as well. A lot less miles on trucks that are twice as full. If they only went to one half of our town on even days and the other half on odd days, but they delivered the overnight/next day (b2b usually) packages every day, that wouldn’t bother me at all.

That makes so much sense!!!

A vast majority of what my carrier delivers is junk mail. What a waste of time and money. If they take out the need to hit ever single box every single day I assume things will get much better. Oddly enough, they now have a second driver just out delivering packages, so I will still get USPS boxes on Sundays sometimes. I can only imagine how difficult a problem all of this is but taking out the everyday thing will probably eliminate the need for junk mail which honestly means one carrier could probably do two routes (one each day) of just real full priced mail.

I’m curious if you’re exploring cheaper options for smaller package sizes. I’m kicking myself for not adding the Tiny Touch Plate to my cart when I bought my LR4 kit. Thought I had it in there, but I forgot.

I’m sure there are reasons for the flat rate shipping. But $10 shipping costs for a $9 touchplate makes me take a step back. Is the extra money really going to hurt me? No. But it does make it harder to justify buying other small items like bits that are readily available elsewhere.

It does have me waiting for finish the LR4 build to make sure there isn’t anything else I need.

The example here is a bit dated with the advances in computer vision / ai the last few years…but…I run into this almost daily:

Doing web development I deal with it daily - even my boss who’s also been doing this for 25+ years with me often gets tripped up by where that line is between “Easy, give me an hour or two” and “Give me a research team and a few years.” But I guess he’s still more business/design oriented than code despite putting up with me for so long

And it’s definitely not just computers. After I made the murder cat for my GF yesterday her immediate response was “I want a bigger one for the bushes so it can kind of be sneaking out…with glowing eyes and a subtle backlight glow”

She was a little surprised to hear that going from a 12" tall version to a 36" tall version, making it able to survive outdoor conditions, and giving it some solar LED’s is going to take more than a few minutes longer than the first one took me

Tracking and my time value. The number one reason is tracking. If I do not ship with a tracking number I will get an overwhelming amount of emails asking where it is. As it is people still ask me “I checked my tracking and…”

My best reply to this exact situation is load up on endmills and other small consumable items to make it worth it. Shipping one item is never going to be economical to your wallet or the time it takes me to package, label, and hand off to the pickup.

The other part of this is that the estimate for the first part is probably low. Software engineers (like myself) tend to be very optimistic when it comes to time estimates. A mentor when I first started said to “always add 50%”. He would pause and add, “Then double it!”

Completely understandable. I was just curious since you were looking at other options. The way I figure it, the extra shipping costs is penance for my mistake in the first place.

This is why I could never go into business for myself. I’m terrible at this part and too much of a perfectionist to let things go.
