Okay, the headings can’t do strikethrough. Gonna leave it as a homage though!
I finally got around to doing the Catan that I had moved back again and again for fear of actually doing it and having to commit to such a project.
A very warm Thank you to @ijustlikemakingthing for providing the files and links to all the great figures in his build thread, whithout them it would have been a lot more work. And it still was a whole lot of work. It took me around 20 hours and I still made a lot of small mistakes (that you may or may not spot) and learned a whole lot. For instance that if you have a very precise CNC, the outer parts will not fit (I mean, you could hammer them in, that fits perfectly, but you actually want them to bit a bit loose so you can take them apart after the game… That was an hour of sanding with a Dremel…), that you really have to take care not to lose 0 when changing the tools (because the roads really barely fit) and that you really have to take care with 0, which was different for my Wenge for whatever reason though I used a touchplate.
I also would make the numbers “go through”. I only made 8mm recesses, but then they don’t fit exactly if your 0 wasn’t spot on (see above).
One thing I want to change are the numbers. The red numbers are definitely needed, as well as the smaller ones to not lose the overview and I am missing the letters. I have a plan, but it will have to wait for a bit. It includes chestnut and red heart…
Pictures of the “packaging” and our first real game.
Wood is Satinwood (Wheat), Maple (Sheep), Wenge (Wood), Bog Oak (Ore), Smoked Pear (Clay) and Honey Locust (Desert - it has the dunes included!!). The sea is cherry, as well as the numbers. The symbols were drawn by my oldest daughter about a year ago, so she’d forgotten all about it.
Over Christmas 2024 my friends in the Northeast got me hooked on Catan. I have been looking for a set to print, laser or cnc and this by far is the most beautiful yet. All the other sets I had found and liked, required painting. This is stunning all by itself.
Would it work using all the the same type of wood and different shades of stain for the different pieces? I want to make one of these too. Are the plastic pieces printed or purchased?
nope not stained just mineral oil, just some exotic woods. the middle pieces with the numbers that are red, I painted then used a laser to engrave and cut them out. the cards are the same painted then laser. oh actually the box is stained but that is the only stain used
