Autodesk used to have a Slicer that could slice 3D objects into stacked objects and objects you have to “push” into each other to create a 3D model cut from 2D material. I wanted to use it to create a skateboard mold but didn’t then.
Claude took 90 seconds to recreate the basic functionality. It took another 10 minutes to make it okay-ish.
Very cool. I remember that tool - and finding it was gone by the time I had a use for it
Would be nice to have a language switch - chrome’s built in translate did well but I’m not sure what “Spiel im Schlitz” is as google translates it as “Game in the slot” I’m guessing it’s a clearance setting?
The nesting is a little unintuitive as well - I assume the default 600x400x0 is a piece of stock (The labee is “plate” hwich makes sense for a 3D printer but I think “stock” makes more sense for CNC.) and you can define mulitple pieces in different sizes. But there’s no label explaining that.
The default mode of “Planted” (again googles translation - not sure if that’s an accurate translation of Gesteckt) was a little confusing as I was expecting the “Gestapelt/Stacked” output and I wasn’t sure what “Planted” meant. I figured it out eventually though.
The “Planted/Gesteckt” mode seems a bit iffier. On some of the models I tested it gave non-usable output. But that was probably due to the material settings and the model being too small.
I just gave it a quick try with some random STL’s I had on hand and it looks like it works.
One thing that would be nice - a way to map the cuts back to where they are in the object to ease assembly. If you could hover over a piece and see it highlight in the 3D model that would be great.
The output as a single DXF/SVG seems a bit off as well - I think I’d rather have a separate file for each “Plate/stock”
Really cool though! Even if you don’t do anything else with it I’m stashing this aside as I can see it being useful already
I requested Claude to do that, it was English first and I didn’t realize it had changed, but my free plan is used up for today. It’s halfway through adding it.
Yeah, that’s been taken from the CNC Box designer. It’s got an explanation there.
Good idea, gonna ask Claude to do that.
It puts the border of the plates into the DXF on anther layer. My preferred workflow, because I can just select the corner as 0.
Going to add your feedback and that’s about it. I find it absolutely incredible that Claude can copy a program in a few seconds… being much smaller than the original in an HTML… Lol.
Nice! The highlighting makes it a lot more obvious what piece goes where.
Two more little thoughts - it might be nice to have the option to put the labels on the parts so you could mark them for assembly. And being able to zoom/pan on the plates/stock might be nice.
You could put this on github and use github pages to serve it so it’s on-line and easy to access
Looks like we had the same idea! I used Claude for the exact same thing the other day. I plan on hosting mine if I get around to it. I have 3 different slicing modes (stacked, crate and radial). Draggable panels so you can move them into better sport for the design, dogbones in slots based on bit size, kerf compensation for laser mode, labels to help with assembly. Still adding features as I find a need for them and fixing a few bugs but should be able to get something hosted today.
Yeah I added radial since the design I was actually making would have used a lot less stock by doing it that way. Moving panels allows you to get things looking a little nicer. Will update again soon with ability to add panels in manually, save/load projects, and include a tolerance test.
