Repeat V5 build

I have two in use for various things. They are in Argon NEO BRED cases- metal case, thermal pads, and fan. I recommend these- my temps stay good and I never throttle.

How’s the progress on the V5?

I don’t know if I’m too late for this, but as part of the troubleshooting process for my printer, I went back to make sure that I had the top and bottoms plates aligned correctly as the CAD wanted.

I drew up a quick alignment block to keep the holes aligned, as well as the spacing from the rails exact as the CAD was drawn.


@Jonathjon and @vicious1 did not do this for their printers and did not have any problems, but it might be some cheap insurance for you if you aren’t already past that step

I’m ready to start assembly, except I need to finish my LR3 to cut the panels for the frame.

That’s awesome, I was about to do the same thing, thinking also that it might be helpful.

When you started troubleshooting your machine’s potential alignment/pulley/belt issue causing some kind of artifacting- I started thinking even more about assembly/alignment jigs for mine.

So this is potentially very timely and interesting to me.

OK, it’s been a -REALLY- long time since I posted any updates to this thread, but I’m coming back to the Repeat build. But first yet another detour.

I’ve long had a Lulzbot TAZ 5, it’s been a long lived beast even if older and needing constant attention. It’s got >20,000 hours on it, and I had a spare in storage for parts. I decided over the holidays when several printers went down to start getting all my stuff in order, fixed or given away or torn down.

I’ve considered for quite a while tearing down the TAZ printers to use as frame parts for a Repeat V5 build, but never pressed on.

Over the holidays I got a bunch of printers running, including some work on the TAZ. I also found a smaller makerspace a ways from my house had some TAZ, and had a discussion with their 3D printing person. Long story short, instead of donating TAZ, I ended up with more spare parts printers. LOL. (Or, to rationalize things, extra frames for Repeat printers.)

This also includes one of the later machines- a TAZ workhorse.

Fiddling with all of these reminded me of what I love and hate about these machines. They’re very rugged, but also klunky and awkward.

The newer ones that have a kludge bed leveling system where the nozzle has to make electrical contact with metal washers at the four corners of the bed. The system is an idiot’s exercise in overcomplicated rube goldberg engineering. This is why I struck with the Taz 5 for so long, wishing only that I’d had the time to add a BLTouch to it.

In going through the stash of new parts printers, I came across a Taz 5 with a BLTouch on a stock 2.85mm extruder, and got it running. I started using up more of my old 3mm filament and remembered why I put some of it aside… This grey PLA is NOTORIOUS for clogging, jamming, and not sticking to any bed under any circumstances. I got a HEPA filter mount for my new Prusa printer out of it, which made me feel pretty cocky about it:

You can just make out the BLTouch, and someone had already upgraded the bed to a magnetic spring steel build plate.

Next print up, I fired up a set of FlashForge A5M plates (Doug Joseph’s design), for a friend’s new (used) A5M. Disaster:

Not really shown as I’d already removed it was the ball-O-PLA that surrounded the nozzle and hot end, and must have broken a wire on the thermistor. The printer had stalled with a Maxtemp error in Marlin.

I’m going to start tearing down the spare TAZ to get cracking on my Repeat (more on that in the next post below…).

Meanwhile, I do have a big box of cast off H2V2 extruders due to some wheeling and dealing, plus a new in box original H2V2 that I bought for the Repeat but haven’t yet used.
On a whim, I tore into the H2V2s and from the pile of dead parts, reassembled one with seemingly good parts from multiple donors. I also grabbed the new old stock one out of its box.

I’m setting about building up some new tool heads for the TAZ that will remain after I get going with Repeat builds.

I’ll finish building these up, and swap to a pair of TAZ, then debate which of the remaining donor machines gets torn down to frame up the Repeat. More on that in the next post…

OK, continuing my ramblings about the on-again , off-again Repeat V5 build in my project queue:

I have Ryan’s CAD saved locally, but every time I try to dust it off (like, today), something bothered me.

It occured to me today what that is.

The design of the repeat seams wrong-way-round to me.

I’ll elaborate.

The CAD lets you size a custom frame to tailor the printer to the bed in use. That’s great for a full on custom printer, but is that the best way?

The belted flying Z doesn’t need a custom outer machine frame.

If the bed has the three mount points on an 80/20 T, or a milled sheet of material, the whole thing could use standard sized frames, and the only customization then is the mount plate for the heated bed.

What does that do? It lets you make kits, so a first-time build is approachable at most skill levels.

That’s what I’m going to explore with my build, with some newly identified objectives:

  • Stock size frame suitable for up to ~305mm square build plate.
  • T or milled plate to adapt my heated bed to the stock frame.
  • An extruder/toolhead that isn’t an H2V2, preferably one used on other machines.
  • Klipper firmware, probably SKR pro but perhaps even Octopus or Manta.
  • Outer panels for the stock frame suitable to be milled on LR4, saving a crap ton on extrusion connectors.
  • DIN rail electronics cabinet at back.
  • Z brakes.

Stretch goals:

  • Build chamber heat control
  • Build chamber exhaust control

INDX will go on my shiny new Core One L as soon as I can get my hands on the INDX upgrade, then I’ll consider adding it to other machines. I’m super excited about that, by the way.

I’m going to try and get up to speed on using Klipper on all my machines save the Core One L.

There’s so many rabbit holes that could lead me down.

The only aerospace grade panels in my immediate future are the ones I’m fixin’ to start slapping avionics on in 2026.

Ok this sort of brings it back full circle. I’ve been studying the Voron toolheads, and am liking the DragonBurner V8, which has really good modularity.

I’m thinking of building one up for the Repeat with an Orbiter extruder and a TZ V6 2.0 hotend.

After much thinking, it turned out I realized I’d seen something similar here in the forums…

I Did abandon the Dragon Burner. Honestly not because it was a bad system but with the cutter added it got really tall.

I went to the AntHead with the Leaf Cutter. It has a small problem in that the lever is too short and does not get enough mechanical advantage to cut reliably. The project has actully gone towards using the CrossBow cutter.

I really like the AntHead overall and it pretty much fits on the Dragon burner mount. I have a slight mod to mine that makes it work great. I am actually about to put another one on my V4. That one has a Happy Turtle Lettuce Feeder on it so I still need the cutter.

No complaints on either from performace standpoint. I was looking at the Yavoth before I found the AntHead though.

I have mounts for the DB for both V4 and V5 standard and reversed belt setups.

Ooh. Are they shared?

I’m not going to use a changer so aren’t planning a cutter for the repeat. If and when one of us figures out an INDX setup for a repeat then I’ll consider that.

Not yet. Which ones are you interested in? V4 or V5 and Normal or reverse belt? I would recommend reverse as it puts the nozzle way closer to the center of the rail.

I’m going to build a V5. I don’t know enough about normal or reverse belt to decide at the moment.

What does it entail to do reverse belts vs normal? Nozzle in the center of the rail seems like it would be better all things considered.

Did you try it both ways? Are the pictures in your build thread?

I made the decision based on CAD. I went with the reverse belts as it put the nozzle closer. I have a set of mounts that work for it. You just reverse the installation of the X axis so the belts are in the back. Easy Peasy.

The shny new Core One L is busy today with critical grandkid assignments (!!), so it’s over to the A5M to start printing Repeat parts. Look familiar?

All righty, then. After determining to make up some new toolheads for the Lulzbots, and having a HUGE box of dead H2V2s (and a new in box V1)… I set about doing extruder rebuilds.

The issues with these extruders amaze me.
Someone at BTT needs a good swift kick in the backside. So close to great, so close to garbage.

These will be familiar sights to anyone who’s ever fought with one of these:

Slowly worked through the box. I have a pack of replacement bearings, and I thought I had some thin stainless washers I was going to use as shims for the ratted out recesses. I still might, I have quite a pile of parts to work with.

Ruled out a bad thermistor here, a bad heater there, an ugly hot end block… slowly working my way through mixing and matching and replacing things.

It’s one way to spend a Sunday :zany_face:

Used that heat set insert machine I mentioned in the post above. Love that thing.

End result was four probably good extruders, and three TAZ toolhead printed parts sets.

I need to wire these up and mount the BLTouches (I only have two available at the moment). Making the connector harness to plug these into the factory cable assembly isn’t my favorite task!

Oh, and since I mentioned it a few posts up above, the HEPA filter I made for the Core One L right before the TAZ 5 extruder got wrecked:

It uses a Tesla cabin filter as the media. Super cheap, $20 for a two pack at the online bookseller.

I’m also going to start measuring and trying to sort out what frame size makes sense if using all the ā€œstockā€ MGN rails that I bought back when prepping to build the Repeat V5.
