Project Cookie Monster

What is it?

Andrew Klein’s twin turbo vise. Bought it a few years ago with plans to make a workbench, but figured this would do just fine.

New version is like, $700. Sure thing… Not going to happen.

Yeah, I got it when he was clearing stock so he lowered the price quite a bit and through in a bunch of adders. That’s why I bought it before I was ready for it.

It’s still a luxury item, but it’s pretty cool.

It looks really great. I might try to make a simpler version myself. :slightly_smiling_face:

There is always the DIY method

Thanks, I did see that, but I don’t like the two screws. Yours has got the right idea, one in the middle (or on one side) that turns the other side as well. The traditional ones use a chain I think to achieve that, but those gears just look nice. The second one isn’t really needed.
I want one in the middle of my table to clamp stock vertically for fingerjoints.

Agreed, I really like the gear set. I am a fan of showing good engineering (also couldn’t resist putting a pop of color on it).

I have a similar thought too with finger joints. Working on making a vertical skirt today that would be the clamp mate that also has dog holes so I can easily mount things anywhere along the overhang.

Like this (start at 2:06 if the direct skip does not work)?

YES, this almost exactly! It’s MDF so I won’t cut in t-track this time, but I think a version 2 will look very similar to this.

Thanks for sharing

Love the ability to laser as well as cut. Why does it have a separate core? Practicalities of getting the height right for the laser without having to take the cutter out of the spindle, as you might if laser and spindle were on the same unit? Or something else?

I am looking for all the bells and whistles

It came down to immediate practicality reasons for me. I want to have the ability to use either one without a whole changeover, re-tramming, etc. I also have a couple ideas to use them in parallel, not sure if it will work out but still in the planning stages.

It was also due to how freaking big the laser is, it is too big to hang off of the main core like others have it. It cuts the width of the x axis down, but I am okay with that for the time being. I still have ~41” of shared space to work with.

One thing that I haven’t completely solved for my laser is smoke evacuation. I’ll be interested to see what you come up with.

I currently have the ability to raise garage doors on both sides of my garage (think “pull through” to a concrete slab out back.) So I get enough cross-draft that the smoke is carried out sufficiently. But as I sit there and watch (and smell the smoke) I wonder if I should do more. Potentially a hose (similar to the dust collection) up to a vent with a fan?

Yeah, I have a similar setup in the bay of a barn. I have a couple of AC Infinity fans I set up for a finish room/paint booth I am thinking to pull for some added evacuation. Maybe a pull device like the hamburger warmers at a fast food joint.

I keep you updated.
