Piper 1 3D printer

Inspired by MPCNC design I have made a 3D printer design based on conduit pipes and 608 ball bearings as linear motion system. The very first version of the printer was printed on MPCNC with 3D printing head. I am cutting print beds on MPCNC with the router head also.

Alex that looks awesome how many did you make. I see several in the pic. Please post more pics.

Any videos of it running? More details please.

Are you going to make the files available?

Gary

Thank you. So far I built 4 but only the first one was printed on MPCNC  rest of them self-reproduced. So officially MPCNC is the father/mother of piper printers

Sorry links did not go through first time.

Love it! I have to keep telling myself I have enough 3d printersā€¦ my wife would kill me ā€¦ then again if I hid it in the garageā€¦

@Neil, make it the same color, then just donā€™t let her see both at the same time.

Neil, my wife was the same until I started printing ā€œusefulā€ things for the house. Started with a brush stand. But when I printed dowels for her new fancy shoes (she lost one of the dowels after the first walkout) I was free to make few more printers

My wife is on to my tricksā€¦ I get the eye roll when I give her the same ol line of ā€˜this is the same one I had last year, rememberā€™ too many hobbies not enough places to hide ā€˜upgradesā€™ā€¦

Well you got on Hackaday, I am proud of you and to be any little part of it so I put you on the front page here as well.

Congrats and thanks!

Ryan, Thank you for your support. Missed you at ERRF, it was a great event.

Wow! Look at that! Space to walk!

I really had a hard time deciding if I should go or not. Being just one guy running this little biz ERRF came at a bad time, I had other things that had to be done. Now that I know there is room thereā€¦plan ahead and next time for sure!

I heard that some people are planning to get 8 tables next year for one exposition so it should be more crowded

They also thinking of moving the show to September-October rather than June. I think it is to involve their students in.

Great work on the piper design, Alex!

Do you have any pictures of prints made with piper that you might be able to upload? I have a ton of 1/2 conduit laying around and an Itopie that I am tempted to convert, but I am worried about ringing/ghosting/resonance in the prints from this machine due to the heavier mass of the carriages.

Hi Ubaldo,

This is what is coming out of Piper 1. You may also check interview to ā€œInside the mind of Mattā€ for more insides https://youtu.be/ybxNmI4ZSYw

Is this considered a good print?

Iā€™m really just asking, I donā€™t want to be a dick.

Maybe some size comparisons, or specs like layer height etc. would help for perspective?

Next to 608 ball bearing. 0.4mm nozzle, o.2mm layer height 70 mm/s print speed, maybe a little too hot.

Might try slowing down a touch, thatā€™s pretty fast even for a delta.

Barry, you are right, slowing down should help. To be frank, when I printed that boat at ERRF I put Piper 1 to the edge.

Slowing down to 55 mm/s did help. (Blue is slower)
