Not all ESP-32's are equal

My woes trying to find an ESP-32 board for my Jackpot controller. As with all of my other builds (LR3 and now LR4) I would really love to be able to buy from the V1 Engineering shop. However, as I live in the UK, shipping makes it cost prohibitive. The ESP-32 devkit on V1E is $13, however shipping is $45. So I have always had to source components from the UK or Europe, but getting the correct or matching components that are available in the US can be a nightmare, especially when sellers on Amazon/eBay don’t provide all of the specs.
My first purchase from Amazon arrived (pack of 3, but cheap enough) but turned out to be only 30-pin. Then, after reading a topic “Which ESP32 is the right one”, the only version E I could find turned out to be 40-pin. I needed 38-pin, so try again. Ebay came up trumps (nothing to do with the recent election), a 38-pin version E which took a week to arrive. I immediately installed the firmware and went to place it into the Jackpot board, only to find out that the distance between the two rows of pins were too narrow, by about 3mm :face_with_symbols_over_mouth: :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:
I then read that there was not much difference between the version D and E. Version D’s are readily available, so I got one of those.
I have found, so far, that the only difference seems to be slower file transfer speed when setting it up.

These will still work, just flex the headers in. I shipped 50 or so out this way when sourcing was slow.

Still working with elecrow to offer my esp from them as well. They seemed to have hit a growth spurt though so production has slowed a bit.

I’m from the UK and bought mine through amazon, from the recommended company elecrow And it took about two weeks, so not too bad
