New MPCNC for 2020! - Primo -

I thought gyroid was faster because it was all curves, and fewer sharp angles (better acceleration profile). And I didn’t realize it was stronger

For Primo, it sounds like the parts that are changing are printed parts and fasteners, but everything else stays roughly the same, is that correct?

How big is the estimated demand for the primo machine? Once it comes out, will the parts bundle be backordered for months? I am new to MPCNC, and I wonder if I should buy all the parts now before the Primo comes out and demand shoots through the roof.

Gyroid at best is roughly the same speed as rectilinear (which is the standard default), at worst can add multiple hours to the print.

It’s faster to travel in a straight line than it is to go in a wave. Just as a sanity check, I downloaded a random model from thingiverse (baby yoda) and at 50% infill, rectilinear is ~9 hours and gyroid is ~14 hours. At 15% infill rectilinear is at 6.5 hrs, and gyroid at 7 hours.

I must have been thinking about some of the wacky honeycomb infill patterns… Thinking about it, it would be slower then rectilinear.

PLA can do this for 2 main reasons.
*Heat creep. Lots of info about this on YouTube. Remove heat. No enclosure for PLA. Add cooling. Shorten the heat break between the heater block and the cooling block.
*Too much tension. The spring that holds the drive gear can get too tight. Causing the PLA to just shred instead of pushing through. Hard to explain but just try loosening the tension.

This is all other things being equal, of course. Since gyroid is stronger, you could use less infill % which might even be able to bring it down closer to the rectilinear timeframes, using less material.

Personally when I design and print my own project parts I don’t go over 30% with gyroid. If I need more structural strength I add perimeter layers. That’s were I find I get more strength anyway. Usually I am using 5 to 15% infill. I rarely go up to 30%. For the MPCNC parts If I print new parts I might use as many As 6 perimeter layers and 25% infill. But then. I would test it against the recommended print settings.

Even worse, cura is horrible at calculating the acceleration times and the prints always take longer. When I use straight path infill, the total print time estimate is off a little. When I use gyroid, it’s off a lot. Other slicers might be better.

Ryan can still change everything at a moment’s notice until it is officially released.

But the motors, controller, screen, basically all the electronics are probably going to be the same.

The bolts and nuts will be different, but it isn’t clear how different. It may be a few more or less of different sizes, or a complete replacement. We have to wait and see.

The printed parts will be completely different, but it isn’t clear if the center of one can be used with the corners of another (for example). Even if Ryan has made a decision on this, it can change at any time (if he discovers a problem with the conduit version, he may change all the versions in a way that breaks compatibility with burly).

Good question. Ryan can order a truckload of parts (or many truck loads) but he can only ship what he can pack. He doesn’t like owing anyone anything, so my guess is there will be some added each day, and they will be gobbled up the same day, and shipped the same day. Each day, over and over. I don’t think a new version will necessarily cause a huge spike in sales on its own (not a huge percentage of people will replace their working machine). But I do expect a large number of people are waiting for primo, or they have been postponed by the covid supply issues, and there will be much higher demand than usual.

If I were in your shoes, I would be happy with a Burly version now. When he releases the duo (or whatever the next primo is), you can patiently wait with your burly for them to be in stock and buy that version after your burly has more than paid for itself.

Jeff in a past post by Ryan he stated he will not be selling anymore Burly Kits so you probably should add they will need to source their own parts for the Burly if they choose to go that route. Just a thought.

Yeah Ryan still has all the individual parts for the burly kit in the V1 store (except for fasteners and printed parts, but I have a 3d printer).

Thinking about wall thicknesses. A 0.6 nozzle with 3 perimeters will be 1.8-1.98 mm thick. A part built with a 0.4 mm nozzle and 3 perimeters will be 1.2-1.32 mm thick. As we talk about infill and walls we should try to be detailed.

A 0.4 mm nozzle is standard. If you are doing something non-standard, you should definitely mention it.

I am pretty sure Ryan prints all his v1 prototype parts in 0.5 mm nozzle and has made that clear.

The Burly version is a proven platform with a lot of community add-ons. You won’t be doing anything wrong by printing the Burly now, and maybe the Primo later if you think it’s necessary.

Currently you’ll end up with some bearings, nuts and bolts if you upgrade from burley to primo. That may change with the new, new core, haven’t seen it yet. Burley is plenty good enough to build right now.

I think I’ll wait for the Primo because the Rambo board is out of stock on V1, and I’d like to upgrade to dual end-stops down the road, so if I bought parts now id have to get the Archim board. I’m a noob and the Archim board sounds like it’s more of a challenge then the Rambo.

Hi, I’m new to the forum and really excited to build my own cnc machine! From what I’ve read it seems like there is a lot of uncertainty on when primo will be ready - I totally understand - but I was curious if I could get a recommendation for my timetable. I would like to finish this build by the end of June, maybe beginning of July, so I can get some use out of it during the summer. I was going to purchase the kit for burly, but that is currently unavailable, so now I am debating whether I should try to individually source parts, or wait until a new kit is made for primo. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!
