New MK4 is out!

And it now happens earlier than before after redoing the cables… Argh! And now it’s normal again. It’s really random. It’s not that it isn’t working all the time, it often does work, it is also accepting commands via the button (I blindly changed filament twice) when it isn’t showing anything.

This thread reminds me how happy I am that I went into Comp Sci instead of EE, where side effects are the exception, not the rule. :laughing:

Yeah… maybe you’re right. But I still like the Prusa project. Growing pains and market demands and all that.

I’m just crossing my fingers that:

  • my printer will shop soon!
  • And that I’m not in the same spot as Phillip. BUT - if I am, I will certainly have some insights to keep my mind buzzing while waiting for Prusa to get their stuff sorted out!

That would make sense. One of the common fixes for issues like this is some form of watchdog reset where the status of the hardware can be checked and if it doesn’t match, the system gets reset and keeps working, especially for displays. It’s part of a ‘defense in depth’ strategy. Best thing is to not have any issues, but you can’t guarantee that, so next thing is to make it so that if it fails, it fails in a brief and low impact way, then next that it fails safely and visibly, etc.

The micro-match connectors can’t be reversed.

Could well be. In theory the spread-spectrum approach works to limit the overall effect of the EMC profile emitted, but also ends up functionally sweeping it across a range of different frequencies which makes it more likely that something will eventually land on a bad combination. I’d still say that it’s exposing an underlying problem rather than creating that, if it is the case, but it could be a worthwhile thing to check.

Prusa thinks it’s an LCD problem and they are sending me a new one. They have a new revision since earlier this week. :sweat_smile:
I also asked sheepishly whether I could use any ribbon cable for the LCD if the new one didn’t work, now they are including a spare one as well. That should cover all the bases. :smiley:

I rerouted all the motor cables under the buddy board as a user in the forums suggested as a fix, it also didn’t help.

Always the problem with intermittent faults and things that worked for other people. It’s the proverbial tiger repellent problem. I sprayed it on myself and didn’t see any tigers, so it must have worked!

There is a VERY slight chance it might be something else, eg. we had a one separated case the other week where a hotend fan was shorting out and it was causing blackouts as well, but in that case the user was not able to operate the printer at all. But it’s not really possible to tell 100% without making sure that the xLCD itself is fine first. We also had a few other cases of the blinking display where we sent a replacement, and we haven’t had anyone come back yet stating that the printer still has the problem - most of it was due to shipping damage.

Besides that I have found a really ingenious solution to my filament buffer/drybox problem. I wanted a buffer that is still in the drybox, but most of them are too complicated or too big for my boxes. Then I stumbled upon this: Printables This model attaches to the spool loosely and makes it impossible for the filament to leave it so it can’t tangle outside. Ingenious, really simple and it works splendidly. Also, you don’t have to change filaments in a big buffer, you just attach the rings to a new spool and never have to think about it again.

So it’s been 6 days since you tried to get to support, two of them have been on a weekend - it would be a lot nicer not to have had the problem, but I guess this is why the customer service is so renowned.

I tried reading this thread, but woke up with my head resting on the keyboard and a serious headache thinking I was back in college and wondering if I was late for my 8am class…

Then I saw my kid walk by and really had a cognitive dissonance issue trying to figure out which part was the dream and which was real.

Print quality is amazing.

Print took 5 hours.

Also around 4.5 hours. Even the top surfaces look incredible.

It’s not going to be of any help - but I’m away from home until next sunday, so I’ll probably have to change delivery option to a fascility. The missus and I are going to celebrate our 40th birthday together next weekend at our cabin with lots of guest, it would be kinda embarassing to skip it just to go home and assemble a 3d printer! That would’ve been a strange kind of mid-life crisis.
