New build in Central VA

Yeah thats pretty warm for normal pla, but pretty normal for pla+ and translucent or “silk” colors.

Moisture out of the box is very possible. Whenever you get a roll make sure the bag still has a strong vacume seal (you shouldn’t be able to move the plastic wrap around the roll at all) and even if it is you can still get ones with alot of moisture out of the box.

I live at 6000ft above sea level, so I expect some bags to be a little loose, and potato chip bags look like balloons. The nice thing is, moisture is not a problem here. All our water is frozen into snow flakes.

Well went to the Orange Big Box to get 2x4s
OMG they have got expensive. So got half as many as planned.

Tomorrow I’m make a bench. Plans are drawn so next step is cutting the very very expensive lumber and screwing it into a bench.

Thankfully I have a full sheet of 3/4” MDF so part of it will be used for the spoilboard.

I also got labels for the label maker. So labeled my metric bolt bin.

What sucks is with 1/2 the 2x4s I wanted I won’t be able to build the new bench to hold the small parts (aka nut and bolt) bins.

The plan was to build a new one, move my drill press down and put it next to my work bench. I like the bins to my left as I’m working. This way I just have to reach down to get the stuff I use most.

Talk about luck changing!

Today is going to be rainy and awful out. Spring thunder showers!
So perfect day to spend in the shop.
The plan as mentioned in the last post is to build a bench for the MPCNC.
If I have time I’ll cut the pipe (if I find the other die grinders with the cutting discs)
And just keep plugging along with shop cleaning and organization!
Pics to come as I’ll be enjoying the rainy day in the shop.

One question.
I’m thinking a shelf or two might be useful. Would it be wise to build shelves or drawers in the bench to hold tooling and accessories or is it a bad idea? I can see reasons for and against it.

Whichever you like. There are some odds and ends. Especially as you use it longer.

Alternatively it is nice to have the space under it open for a shop vac or wood storage

Good luck with you build. I started mine January 1st, 2021 of this year and have been having a blast. I just noticed I did not say I “finished” as I think I will never finish as the is always something to do in between jobs.

I am a retired Connector Product Design Engineer with Molex and spent my career designing connectors. Mostly in the data and then the high speed backplane.

Anyway the stepper motors are “DuPont” style contacts. We copied them and marketed as Molex SL. Many of the control boards (I used the SKR Pro) are JST XH connectors. A very good Japanese competitor but a very different design.
I used the DuPont in the beginning but just did not feel comfortable as the housing did not really match as well as the connector “wipe”.

Anyway bought the JST XH style kit from amazon. Spent a day switching them all over on the board end and just loved the “snap” into the housing and also the female half mates at the start of engagement and feels correct.

I happened the have the hand crimpers for the DuPont and while they are not correct can be used. The JST connectors are much shorter in length so their crimpers are much narrower.

Some people have used hot glue or CA but the connector gods would not allow me to

I’m going to get a new shop vac. And yea wood storage is always an issue especially in a small shop.

I just don’t want surfaces that collect dust and are hard to clean as I hate dirt.

I’d really like a way to organize the bits, clamping devices, and other things I’ll be using with the MPCNC.

Nothing new this week. Been in a week long training class.
I’m waiting on the stepper motors and will get all of the body put together once they come.

I do have a question. What is the recommended board from V1 now?
I’d like to use dual ends tops or be able to in the future. I ask as my next thing will be to place the order with V1

Based on that and the reputation for reliability, I’m happy I went with the full-size Rambo when it was time to choose. It all worked as it should right from the start. :+1:

I think the two most popular (and therefor best supported) options would be the full sized Rambo or the skr PRO.

If your not planning on getting it from the v1 shop, I would recommend the skr pro (make sure it’s the SKR PRO and not the Skr v1.3 or skr v1.4 or skr v1.4 turbo. They will work but are not supported as much as the pro) because you can flash the firmware using an SD card.

Which is preferred from V1?

if your getting it from v1 it’s a toss up. Keep in mind I have not tried either (I use Bart Dring’s esp32 6 pack controller) this is just what I have read here on the forums. I have used the SKR mini and SKR 1.4 turbo in my 3d printers and have had great experiences with them. But here is what I have heard about the two options:

The full Rambo is tried and true, with proven durability and reliability it is a solid choice but it is an older design.

The skr pro is newer, more powerful, more versatile, with all the bells and whistles. It’s probably a little less bullet proof but more future proof, and a little cheaper.

I still think rambo is the most solid board. The mini rambo is also a champ, if you don’t need dual endstops. The skr pro works well, but someone accidentally connected 40V to a rambo this week and it was fine. The quality is very good on the rambos.

If you like to tinker with electronics, then skr pro. If you like to tinker with woodworking, rambo. If you want to save a few coin, mini rambo.

Thatay not be completely fair, because the skr pro can be set up without really tinkering.

@jeffeb3gee thanks.
You make it sound like all options are good.

I just want the @$#& thing to work! Said in fun and half in jest.

I don’t think the cost is that extreme between the different boards. At least not enough to make a decision based on it.

I guess what’s important is which option makes more sense from a reliability and support perspective. Or if one will be better for the long term.

Of the three it sounds like the Mini Rambo has the least capabilities. So if I’m not misunderstanding anything that leaves the Rambo and SKR pro.

I

I would say if your the kind of person that wants to build it now and not mess/tinker with it for the next few years or if your really worried that you will mess up the wiring in a substantial way (like putting 40v to a 24v board) buy a Rambo. If you are going to build it and and modify it and upgrade it and try to add new features and try new things and feel confident you can follow wiring instructions then get the skr pro.

But that’s just the way I think of it.

@Atom thanks.
I’m probably a bit in between.
It’s been awhile since I built anything and even longer since I did any electrical or electronics work.

That said, I can follow instructions, and other than the rare brain far, am careful with wiring. But mistakes do happen.

So I guess the short answer is that I would like to get this working, being able to use it a bit before I start messing with it.

If it helps any, I have an Ender 3 Pro I’ve had about 3 months. I’ve left it mostly stock. I say that as I did replace the extruder when it was giving me issues, and I replaced the bed springs as they were junk. Otherwise, I’m happy with it and I haven’t messed with it other than to add a tool holder. So I don’t plan on modifying it much except that the noise is starting to become annoying so I may get a silent board.

I guess I’ll just pick one in the next few weeks and order it and be done (for now) once I do. That said, I guess I’ll just hear any other suggestions that folks have and take them into consideration!

I think you’ll be fine no matter which you choose if you’re ordering from the V1 Shop. In the year or so I’ve been hanging around I’ve never seen any mention of anything being over promised/under delivered from there and that’s unfortunately not always the case these days.

@B-26 I have no worry about ordering from @vicious1. In fact the pricing seems fair and as long as his shipping is decent that all should be good. That said, I’ve not heard a single complaint which is amazing as shipping from everyone has been difficult with COVID.

Things seem on the upswing, I’ve had a few orders from Amazon recently (not Prime) that were here in less than a week and a day earlier than promised, hardly the case 6 m onths ago.
