MP3DP tuning with klipper

I’m using klipper and have asked a lot of hardware specific questions on a build thread, but I’ve never really completely tuned a printer before. Based on suggestions from this forum, I’ve started off with dimensional and square checking to make sure the mechanicals are aligned and that looks ok. The next step was to run the extruder distance calibration, which looks good and then run a temperature calibration and then retraction calibration.

Temperature was first. I generated a temp tower off of teaching tech’s web page.
This is the setup:
0.6 mm nozzle with a 0.4 mm layer height
additional start gcode is START_PRINT
checked No T0
no ABL
bed is 300x300


base feedrate is 50
additional end gcode is END_PRINT
and all other end gcode is stripped out

The print failed just after the first temperature region printed. No clear message why. I looked at the klippy log with the same date on it and it doesn’t specify anything. I’ve been looking through the klipper docs to try and find out where to get access to any failure error messages and have not found any yet.

Any obvious errors on this tower or the setup? The printer will print a sliced test cube without issue, but fails printing the tower. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks for your help!

What kind of failure, did the print come off the bed (because Bed temp too low at 40deg?), or get knocked (e.g. because no z hop), or some halting message(s) on the screen?

If printer halted with error I’d be rooting around the diff log files as well. Am still learning how to sift through those effectively.

For structural parts, consider layer height no more than 50% of nozzle width. CNC kitchen has video(s) on how layer height effects layer adhesion/strength.

it just stopped printing after like 10 mm height. The part looks good so far, it just stopped and “failed”

Did you happen to monitor the extruder temp?

The code you’ve included above does not have the content from the region where the print ‘stopped’.

Measure the achieved height, and include a. quote of the sections within +/- 2mm of that failure height…

failure was about 10.4 mm

I don’t see anything obviously wrong with that Gcode.

Did you have any indication from the printer what the job state was?
You’ll need to look at the logs- something inside Klipper seems to have given up.

Made a couple minor changes like a print height of 0.3 mm and tried it again fully expecting it to fail. It printed enough for me to see that 205 degrees for this filament is too hot and 190 would be better, so that is helpful.

190, 195, 200, 205, 210 °C from bottom to top. The previous setting was 205 °C with 210 for the first layers. Just goes to show that other settings for other printers or other people’s suggestions are not always the way to go.

Unsure if it is a communication problem (documented issue in klipper docs), or a heater or some other issue.

Then at 190 °C setting, it printed this hinge… Not completely functional without some persuasion, but definitely an improvement.

Maybe… Nice to see you’re not blocked, but would’ve expected one of the several log files to have some kind of bread crumb warning or error message.

For example, before I hot glued and silicone wrapped the cable, if/when my CAN bus cable was yanked causing communication issue, there’d be a message that was clearly indicating an error occured, even if the root cause of the error was not clear to me.

Fortunately there’d be some search results for that bread crumb message on the Klipper forum and/or Internetz that helped me figure out next step and what to fix.

Consider sharing set of log files if you run into mysterious halting problem again, hopefully there’s a useful crumb in there for us.

I am reminded of something @Jeffeb3 said, and I already kind of knew.

Thermistors are not always absolutely accurate, but are usually relatively accurate. What might register as 190 on yours might actually be anywhere from 180 to 215°, but a change of 10° will likely be a real change of 10°. (Remember that we don’t really use a baseline of 0°C but 0°K or -273°C.) As such a 25° error at 500°K is only a 5% error. Most thermistors I’ve seen have a higher tolerance than that.

I used to design and make thermistors. The repeatability was amazing once calibrated, but absolute accuracy was sometimes the issue. A lot of time and effort was typically spent to ensure that the accuracy of both ends of the spectrum was right on, but there was always some that were a little out.

This is an amusing train wreck… Ninjaflex Tpu drips out of the nozzle as liquid at 230 and splashes on the bed. The thermal tower went from 220 at the bottom to, 225, 230, 235, and 240 at the top. Fan was on at 100%. The dropping bridge was pushed to one side by the cooling air. It was pretty interesting to watch. The temperature is reading very low on this. I’ll verify the installation position.

Thinking it might be wise to warm it slowly and see where it starts to extrude and tune from that point… Or maybe put in a new sensor and start all over.

As you already know, you have a thermistor problem.

Either you have a mismatch between what is defined in your config and the actual sensor part, or you have a bad sensor. Maybe both.

I agree, the trouble is the lack of a proper thermally attached reference sensor to know just how far off it is.

If I recall correctly, didn’t you have your extuder blob up and then you had to replace your hot end (or maybe the whole extruder?). What is in your klipper config for the thermistor, and what did you buy to replace the thermistor?

It may not be worth trying to use a 2nd reference thermistor (which would then need a known good configuration to read it with). It might just be better to buy a known thermistor type and then be sure your Klipper config matches- unless you can say with certainty what you have in there now.

I’m changing out my hotend sensor for a PT1000 sensor. Lower resolution but greater range and supposed to be more absolute accuracy. The resolution is still good enough, which is the important part, but better real-world correlation to temperature appeals to me. I think my current thermistor is off by more than I like.

I also do want to try some higher temperature filaments, which the PT1000 sensor will better manage

I appreciate your problem solving skills and pointed directions. Yes, there was that one blob event that took a heat gun to get off and then installed new heaters that basically melted because 12 V heaters on a 24V system are not supposed to work. So after that, then the fan got stuck and didn’t spin. It is a well understood phenomenon that thermistors will drift with excessive heat, but given the mechanical history, it is very likely this is a mechanical issue from damage from one of the “events.”. I think most of these 3d printer thermistors are glass beads, so maybe the glass is cracked or broken and the sensor is damaged but still functioning or perhaps the thermal history has aged the sensor. For these NTC type sensors, when the sensor resistance increases (due to mishandling or wire stretching or bad electrical contacts), the temperature reading drops, so that lines up. I’ll swap it out with another after I print a holder for the wire and filament tube that mounts near the extruder.

II was just wanting to share the sagging bridges and wanting to be lazy and type something in rather than take a ton of stuff apart for once or twice or, c’mon man. You know, I may still I have a precision NIST traceable thermometer around here somewhere, but it tops out at 150 I think before it goes into extrapolation so it may not be super useful.

Another interesting observation while trying to get video of this thermal tower print was that the whole printer shakes on abrupt movements. There are a couple “minor” mechanical modifications that will require nearly complete disassembly to accomplish. So while it is that far apart, might as well lower the corexy within the existing frame and get walls made to on it.

The other part I’m not thrilled about: taking the nozzle silicone sock off means taking the part cooling fan off, which means moving the bltouch, so the whole base-layer thing will need to be revisited and likely redone.

I’ve had to take the fan shroud off of my v4 a few times this month, and it’s a royal pain in the patootie each and every time. On the plus side, I’m getting pretty good at calibrating that first layer…

And now, I have that shiny new PT1000 temp sensor on my desk, and of course I need to pull everything out to install it… Looking forward to that like a kick to the head, but I’ve been getting clogs, so I think I need to just do it. Then I need to print a new fan shroud in something with a hotter tolerance… ASA maybe? Ugh. Then I need to install that.

So I hear the frustration, but if the printer is causing frustration as-is, I think it’s better to just git’er done.

We fly various thermistors on spacecraft, I’m familiar with their issues (and that they’re a relatively cheap sensor so certainly have thier uses).

Maybe, but I’ve seen a trend towards encapsulating them in M3 or M4 studs, or using PT1000s, or various other sensors. I know that I HATE working with glass bead thermistors so have been trying to move over to the M3 stud versions. These can thread into most of the blocks that are either set up to expect them or have an M3 tapped hole where the retainer for the glass bead would otherwise be installed.

I completely hear you! Every time you get within sight of a perfect setup, something comes along to mess it up (I’ve had that happen a number of times.)

I forget- do you have panels for your frame, or are you using brackets? Are you using the Klipper accelerometer features to help tune your accelerations and reduce resonances?

The H2 Revo is looking better and better to me because of this.
Also, we need a better mounting scheme so the fans and assorted parts can come off without being.a major rebuild project.

One thing I’ll say, each time I go through this cycle and rework one of my printers, I get better at it and I usually learn a thing or two along the way. I’m not sure if that’s good or bad overall, as it’s a bunch of work and pretty exasperating when things get messy. But, I like the learning and it’s at least a little therapeutic for me when I rebuild a machine and it’s as good or better than the last iteration.

I don’t know the exact make of the glass bed extra sensor. When it was configured as a Generic 3950, it was much closer to the BQ EPCOS sensor described by BQ documentation. When they are both set as the same sensor type, they are off by quite a bit as seen in the plot. Notice how the offset gets worse the hotter it gets… This is the material change in the thermistor by excessive heat. Its “curve” slope shifts. The sensor isn’t dead, it just isn’t absolutely accurate. As long as we know the offset and repeatability is the goal, in theory one could make this work as it is… but it’ll be replaced.

no panels yet. That is on the list to add. No accelerometer. This system is all analog sensor input. There might be an MPU9250 around here somewhere I could strap on this thing, There is no CAN bus setup available for one that is typically used for shaping.

Is this mount part of a problem?

Notice how the belt moves up and down depending on the direction. The pulley was dirty. I cleaned it. It had some gummy crud on it. Not sure where that came from. The pulley looks canted to the left a little, but that may just be a perspective thing. It looks like when the carriage moves right the belt goes up and when it moves left, it goes down… seems odd to me, but not sure it is a problem.

Still trying to chase down the source of the waviness in the X movement. Have not yet pulled the trolley and cleaned the bearings, but that is likely next.
