Mac software for MPCNC lowrider LR3 cnc machine

I just bought a MPCNC lowrider LR3 cnc machine that another guy built. I never thought to ask about Mac software when I bought it and he gave me a link that is for Windows. I tried searching on Google but no luck Where do I get software for Mac.

Thanks for any help.

Hello and welcome! I primarily use a Mac for CAD/CAM. I used to run EstlCAM via WINE and it worked well enough, but had some minor bugs like font being too big. Now I run EstlCAM via Parallels and it’s flawless. I personally use AutoCAD 2024 Mac for my sketching, but all the major programs work: Fusion 360, OnShape, FreeCAD, etc.

Let us know if you have more questions and we’ll get you up and running

I have been using MillMage on my Mac. I have the Jackpot control board from V1. You will need to check to see if it will work with your controller.

Hi I know nothing yet about this stuff. How do I know what kind of controller I have since it’s a homer build?

home build

You’ll need to post a picture of the control board.

Hi. I don’t know anything about this stuff yet. Are you saying WINE is something that will work on Mac?

I opened the control box and saw this BIGTREETECH SKR-PRO-V1.2

That means your machine runs Marlin firmware on a BigTreeTech SKR Pro 1.2 board. It’s one of the standard controllers used in our builds.

Sage advice. We can help you more effectively if you post pictures of your machine and the controller.

As a new account it may take a couple of posts before you clear the bot filters and can post multiple pictures per reply.

Here’s the controller. I went to the Wine download page the other guy mentioned. I don’t understand why they don’t just have a download like other apps. There’s so many terms that I don’t understand that I don’t even know what is the actual download.

I thought”link copied” was the place to attach files. Now I have to figure that out.

I see different sellers for Parallels. From $30 to $150. How do you know what to get?

I usually just command-c to copy an image I want to paste, then command-v to insert it into the reply.

On some OS/browser combinations you can drag-and-drop.

Welcome!
If you don’t understand any of that, you are not alone. Don’t worry - there are plenty of people here who will guide you no matter what you choose to do. There are plenty of people here who actually enjoy those (to me) complicated interfaces!

I have a Mac, and like to keep things simple in a Mac sort of way, which means no emulation, no in between layers between me and the software. For that reason I’ve been using Kiri:moto for some time - it’s free and will do most basic things (and more) in a reasonably Mac intuitive way.

When the time comes to pay, for a heap of reasons, I am likely to migrate to MillMage - for now you can use it free as well and perhaps that would be smart given where you are, so that you can grow with the App.

@CNCer I would follow the advice of @bitingmidge here and try out Kiri:Moto and/or MillMage. Trying to mess with WINE and Parallels just adds layers of complexity that I don’t think would be helpful to you just starting out. I went that route because EstlCAM is what most people use, so the help can be easier to come by, but I’m also a “computer guy” so the WINE/Parallels pain points were much easier for me to deal with (but still pain points). So instead of spending time/money just to get EstlCAM running, you might as well just try something else like Kiri and/or MillMage and get straight to learning whatever software you choose to use

Hi. Thanks and I will focus on that route then because thinking about it for too long and getting too many ideas will only stop me from getting anywhere.

So, a common controller is BIGTREETECH SKR-PRO-V1.2 which I have. So as long as that will work with your suggestions, I will go with that.

Hi

Is there such a thing as a direct download. I did Google searches for kiri:moto and just come up with pages that have all kinds of things and I’m not sure what they are. I looked for some sort of link that indicates a download for kiri but if it’s there, I don’t know the terms being used.

Great questions, I got you! So there are programs like Kiri:Moto and OnShape (another CAD program) that actually run inside your web browser, so there is nothing to download or install. It can be quite convenient, since they work on any device with an internet connection! Here is the user guide for Kiri: Kiri:Moto | grid.space docs

YouTube is also an excellent learning resource, this looks like a “short and sweet” intro video to get you up and running: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OruqibH_FE

this is a whole tutorial playlist made by Kiri:Moto themselves, it is 4 years old now but I’d have to imagine all the principles are the same, if not otherwise identical: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08795Sj22QE&list=PLRoVgyRoWZpumQIKWm7oldx3bjDivqP24

OK, thanks. I also was given an SD card and the only place I’ve used them before was my cell phone.

So, what do I do with that and do I have to worry about what was on it before?

Do as @ClineDesigns Mike says and you’ll be OK. It runs fine in your browser (but prefers Chrome - erk!!) Once you are up and running it does run well natively on your machine, but don’t attack that until you are ready, it’s really not necessary.

I made a “Kiri:moto basics” documents quite a few years ago and like all well intentioned projects have not updated it (I don’t know if anyone else has, I am presuming not) - the basics are the same now, but you might have to search a bit as some of the menus (maybe all of them) have been moved around.

There are others here who know a lot more than I do - the guide was my way of working through the process - if you would like to update it while doing the same thing, fell free! Kiri:Moto Basics - V1 Engineering Documentation
