I’m excited to upgrade my LR3 to a LR4. My reason for upgrading is that the LR4 is cool. I have no problems with my LR3, it works perfectly to cut and pocket things for Etsy (and fun).
I decided on round steel DOM tubing. 32mm, and 1.651mm wall from a metal supply house. They cut it to the numbers I gave them. Cost me $88. This is a little thicker than conduit and conduit would have cost me $62.
Also I will upgrade to Jackpot at the same time.
LR3 to LR4 upgrade costs (will keep updating):
Part
Cost
Rails
$88
Jackpot CNC controller
$66
Hardware upgrade kit from V1
$37
Going to print in PLA first. I have one million rolls to use up.

Buying metal is hard. When I went to pick it up, I owed $15 but didn’t have to pay it.
Then they also told me I get the “drop” (extra?)
So I have an extra 152" of rail now.

Trying to come up with my color scheme.
I think this red part (1) is X_Belt, but what is the (2) black part called that it screws into?

@vicious1 How could you not smile holding a core? This is so amazing in person. We should bring one to the next maker event.

Very similar. Will be using that too.
This is Polymaker PolyLite PLA in Galaxy Dark Blue. 0.6mm nozzle, 0.3mm layer height

When cutting the struts -
It seems like Estlcam doesn’t include the dogbone feature when you use the part operation. Do I have to choose overcut on each of the inside corners? I didn’t initally and wondering if I should rerun my toolpath.

In the pictures of the completed LR4, it doesn’t look like this hits anyways?

First time cutting aluminum (5mm). It went perfect. No air / no coolant. Trochoidal milling
Used the same settings as @Jonathjon (Thank you!)
Bit was ice cold / room temperature immediately after the job finished.

What bit did you use? I have to commit to my first alu cuts on my lr3 this week. Your results look great! How much does the plate weigh?

vSeccelen:
What bit did you use?
Same one I use for just about everything. It is awesome and lasts a long time.
1/8" Single Flute Carbide EndMill, Great for slower feed rate machines, high RPM spindles, general purpose. If you only buy one endmill for your CNC this is the one.
Price: USD 5.40

Also just for those following along. Remember that you absolutely don’t need to do Aluminum. In fact, the LR3 that cut this out has MDF strut plates.
I am just playing. Don’t get stuck feeling like you need these.

I think most are planning to try it for the XZ plates. But still awesome to see more and more people trying it!!
