Looking to build a low rider

Sorry. Good catch.

I was going to come back and say that I just recently bought another LowRider v3 hardware kit from Ryan, and it not only comes with the end stop switches, but also comes with the “intermediate” wiring that goes from the end stop switch to the long wire sets, and it comes with the pin connectors on that side of those intermediate wires that connect to the long wires, and it comes with the spade connectors. He literally gives you everything that you need in the hardware kit. Nice!

Can I paint the aluminum and MDF plates sent in the parts kit?

I am off next week and putting together the CNC, just want to know if I can safely paint the parts.

I didn’t see it mentioned (I was scanning parts of the thread)…

Loctite. Get some Loctite. Probably just the medium stuff (Loctite Blue), you may want to actually remove them someday, but you also want your grub screws to stay put. Specifically, the little, itty-bitty screws that hold the pulleys to the stepper motors, and the couplers to the lead screws. When those get loose, or fall completely out, you start getting… non-intuitive results. Extreme backlash, stair-stepping, etc., etc.

If you’ve been around IT Support enough, you know that they invariably have to ask if it’s plugged in, and if it’s turned on. Around here, we tend to ask if you’ve checked your grub screws. But we tend to make a bit of a joke out of it, and the people who do have a screw loose (well, besides me, but that’s a whole different kettle of piranha, and a different kind of loose screw) tend to take it with good humor and humility.

There are some who have gotten the heavy-duty stuff (Loctite Red), and are just willing to either chop up the pulleys/couplers to get them off their motors, or just get new motors if the need arises.

I have suggested “Loctite White”, but I think the specialized application methods may scare some folks off…

If using Blue threadlocker, then consider using 243 instead of more common 242.

Sure! I did.

I checked this recently and I believe that the recommended locker for grub screws on pulley shafts at our sizes is Purple, not blue. Loctite 222 or equivalent. On my to-do list to go buy some to compare.

We all use blue. Shush.:yum:

I certainly do

Didn’t know about purple. My AI overlord is telling me to stick with 243…

I think I have everything to start building, just need the time to do it now. I ended up printing your enclosure @DougJoseph for the SKR, not using the default one, the one that has the cable clamp and space for a Pi. :grinning:

Progress after 4-6 hrs of building.

Need to make an adaptor to use the case for the board I printed, terminate the cables, make my connections, and then get some struts made. i ended up making the cut area 50 x 98, so need to see if there are premade strut templates available

@azab2c used a script to generate every single strut from 1100mm to 1700mm. You should find what you want here:

Credit goes to @jamiek for creating the script, I just used cmd shell to gen a bunch of files to make static web calculator possible.

part identification needed, in the kit I have a 3d printed part I don’t see mentioned in the instructions.

What is this part for?

Looks like a Pen holder, so you can do the Crown

perfect, basically just got to crimp on some connectors and mount my x rail to unistrut and I’m on to testing.

Also need to redo some of the hose hooks to make them into cable chain supports.

Looking at the drawing, is the lower chain mount supposed to be mounted on top of a regular hose hook?

Got one more general question

How are you guys getting power into your CNC gantry? I would need 2 outlets inside the gantry, one for the router, one for the control box. is there a good surface mount outlet / extension cable that is tested and used often?
