Was recently gifted a seemingly infinite amount of wood from the heavens (thanks PNW cyclone bomb). Rather than pay to dispose, I may as well season and burn branches/logs to maximize shop comfort and minimize heating and disposal costs.
Could be a traditional wood burning stove, or some crazy convoluted heat exchanger that tries to extract maximum thermal energy. Personally interested in wood burning solutions, but expecting others here would appreciate seeing other neat ways to keep warm.
Shop framing is unfinished, so will be sealing and using Rockwool insulation and 3/8"-1/2" ply sheathing.
I’m prolly just going to use an electric heater. Shaneh has mentioned adding a mini-split though. We’ve been thinking about adding one to my office and her office, so a third wouldn’t really cost that much more.
I’m thinking about getting a Vevor diesel heater. Lots of positive videos. Mount it outside in a weatherproof box so I don’t have to worry about exhaust. Joys of a concrete exterior wall in the backyard I have no problems drilling a hole through.
I don’t know what is this in english but I have used something like this. (Not the cheapest one to use, depends on the price of electricity)
I once heard the idea of building a water pipe inside the wall of the baking oven and the rest on the side of the house. We heat the stove with wood and the water heats up at the same time, begins to circulate in the pipes and heats the house. Like radiators… I think it would be illegal here to build something like that xD
My workshop is was originally build as a garage but ended up as permanent workshop for my woodworking tools. Its insulated with 100mm rockwool and I replaced small heat fans with a heatpump last winter. It heats up the workshop also when its 0 degree Celsius outside.
My shop has the same AC/Heat Pump that my house has. Warms the shop quite easily in the winter and cools it in the summer. Added bonus of if something breaks on the house AC, I can swap parts with the shop and then order a replacement part at me leisure.
Nice pic looks like a great time.
Our hills opened early here, it’s going to be a great year I think. My fam jam went out last Sunday. Oh man I was feeling old the next day. I tried to do a rail on a pipe. And it was such a bad crash my wife laughed so hard she crashed and took out another buddy who was of course laughing at me lol. This is our hill 30 min drive mt baldy.
As for heat a wood stove is very nice.
I have been researching my these vevor diesel heaters they seem to be ok for small applications anyways.
This is a good review although like in the comments I think the cast iron wasn’t the best idea for heat transfer. Maybe an old heater core or radiator would be better.
Some of the new ones have 120vac power supply and carbon monoxide ppm readers.
20s and bad ice here! Rather snow, safer for driving. But 40s are on the way! The constant swings are hard now that i am getting older! So 40 monday, then thursday supposed to be 29 again. Crazy!!
