JJ’s Full Sheet LR3 Rebuild

You have to find a way to say it without ACTUALLY saying it LOL

Just got done crimping a crap ton of dupont connectors and getting the steppers and endstops wired up to the board. Got the board powered and when I click the endstops the green lights flash lol. So we are getting somewhere. About to hook to it with the tablet and see if I can get Z and X to home. If so then time to clean up the last bit of wiring under the control box, clean off the table and get this thing strapped down and ready to run! Trying to at least draw a crown before I leave. Flight leaves at 0530 tomorrow morning LOL

Don’t try to rush things, that’s never a good idea.

Well, yeah, but there’s actually several things that could be said, and this way, people are free to fill in the blanks the way they see fit.

(See what I did there?)

lol that’s pretty funny! Thanks for that. Needed a good laugh after the afternoon we have had. Just got done getting coast guard to come medivac a guy to the hospital after getting shocked by 5,000 volts. Luckily no amps. But entered through his left pinky and came out below his right calf. He was doing much better by the time they got here but still want to get him checked out for sure. Now tomorrow will be real fun with the all the phone calls and paperwork. Come on 11/10 so I can go home and mess with my CNCs and not deal with this mess lol.

Oh man, that is brutal.

Yes. But luckily he is ok. That’s what matters the most. I was a little aggravated that out of all these “higher ups” we have out here no one had the balls to make the call to send him in. But of course all agreed with me when I said the chopper is on the way. It didn’t happen on my boat and never should have been my call. Already told my boss I want a raise lol

That’s exactly my reply when people ask if we get frightened playing in close quarters among the big ships in EU. They are being handled by people who are :-

  1. experts, and generally happy and more than willing to reciprocate when we display a modicum of courtesy and experience.
  2. really don’t want to do the paperwork in the very unlikely event of a mistake, so they are probably more scared of us than we are of them.

It’s worked for fifteen years so far…

Sorry about the mess and hope all goes well.

You may yet have that crown before I do!

This part here for sure. Idk how many times in my career i have said “glad im not the one that has to make that phone call” when we see someone else’s screw up. But it happens to all of us at one point or another. Ive had my fair share of them thats for sure. Good thing is I’m getting to the point in my career that I can screw up but able to recover and most people don’t even know anything was ever wrong LOL.

This case will all be formality as it wasn’t an incident that happened on my vessel or with anything related to my operations. It just got plopped in my lap so unfortunately my name is all over it. The platform guys are the ones really concerned about it. They have BSEE and all their upper management coming out here tomorrow for an inspection. Glad that all has nothing to do with me LOL

I’m inspired to add acrylic sheets behind my struts as well, possibly for the front and back of my gantry. Thus far, I have only been able to find clear acrylic sheets that are convenient to get. Would a frosted spray be effective on acrylic sheet to create the diffusion effect? (I know this specifically referred to your side plates, not the gantry sheet.)

I never did try the spray. Not sure where you are located but I got my translucent acrylic from Amazon

1/4" White Acrylic 24"x12" Sheet… https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HDYPF6G?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Awesome, thanks! I’m going to look for 1/8" sheets, but good to know it’s easily available. I scrolled back some more and saw you cut multiple sections instead of having one long sheet behind your strut. I will probably do the same, since 72"-long sheets are pretty pricey. Gonna have to do it by hand, since the LR is in pieces, but I’ll manage!

Yes I didn’t want to spend the money on a sheet that long. One of those acrylic sheets was large enough to get it all in 3 sections. 1/8” is a good idea. I had to notch out for the braces with the 1/4”

I have been thinking about my build for a while and had already thought about adding leds. Glad to see I am not the only one. Your design and detail is awesome.

Thank you. It was a ton of extra work but I do enjoy it

I can respect the ton of work especially when you go to the length you have. I have added leds to a bunch of my other non cnc projects and it always is so satisfying in the end. I am going to dive deeper into your design when I have free time. I am at the point in my build where i need to start my plan for well basically bling and pop.

Yes I had one fortunate deal where I have a second LR3 that I was able to mill the aluminum struts with and not have to put it together with the temporary struts then take back apart. I had printed out all my mounts and then was able to slide it in the end of the beam and get all mounted up with the strut and acrylic already in place. That made things much easier than having it all together then having to completely take it back apart for the install.
