You can tape a pen to it and draw the crown without any bits. Congrats on getting it going! I was super afraid to turn the machine on my first MPCNC for the first time and once I did, test running each axis and powering down to flip connections was not a normal experience for me, but it worked out ok and now if something goes wrong, it is pretty easy and fast to pinpoint how to fix it. This startup experience is good to have. You are doing it right.
You have also got me to re-read the instructions and they are a mess. I have put patches over patches so I apologize for not giving an easier path for you to follow. I am working on it though. Hopefully when you are ready to get back to it I will have made some progress.
I have learned a few things that makes editing them a bit easier and less time consuming for me.
Make sure your STL output detail is set to “high” or “fine”. It should output a file that is a far higher resolution that is feasible to machine.
What sort of scale is that. How wide is each curved part?
The finest most people would mill would be using a 0.5mm ball end, and if you can imagine taking passes 0.1-0.2mm wide per pass at about 10-20mm/s that give you an idea of how long fine detail takes.
If you can message me privately I can provide you details.
This is a project that I’m doing that’s kind of for a business but also very much personal and they had me sign in NDA so I don’t want to have it out there on the internet until it’s done.
I already asked him if I could speak to you about it and they said yes
We can keep it vague that is fine. Helping everyone carve details is helpful.
I can suggest starting with something small as a test, maybe even just a section of your project. There is a lot to learn about carving. Stopover and speed is kinda hard to get right for tiny bits, but once you do post-processing is minimized.
I am here to give as much advice as I can. Test cuts are key here.
I got a notification in my email from Philip but when I hit view topic it doesn’t show his message does that mean he deleted it??
So this being the first form I’ve ever joined I just want to kind of give a little bit of feedback from kind of a newbie standpoint recently I got a message that seems to have been deleted that I was asking Ryan for one-on-one support when that was not the case if you look at the actual conversation it was he was providing me information and I did not want to put it out on the web so I asked him to message me privately and I would answer his questions
I think one of the biggest things I found doing this conversation in this build is that people are reading things and the interpretation to the response is not what they think it actually is.
I get that they’re going to be a few people that in any group or any chat or any forum interpret what you’re saying incorrectly so then you have to go back and explain it which causes a lot of back and forth or you get multiple responses to your specific question which in turn causes confusion because you’re answering question from person a while person b is also writing their comment so then it’s it’s just kind of jumbled so now I just wait a whole day before even responding to anything so that I can read everything and respond accordingly in one post that’s where I believe most of the problems came from if you look back through the thread was I’m trying to answer multiple questions from the people that are trying to help me which can cause some frustration and of course that would come out in my responses and then people would say well you need to be more patient but when you’re trying to respond to five different people or to someone who basically says you’re over your head and how dare you you know do this or whatever that can cause frustration
so just to be clear I was not asking Ryan for one-on-one support t
I agree as I pointed out in my last post was that through Christmas I’m going to probably do the pin crown and then some foam what I’m working on is making sure the design that I have done as a 3D designer typically I use resin and fdm I want to make sure that the designs I have are ready for when I do get to the point so that there’s no delay…
In my previous life I work for oil and gas and I had I was a quality control inspector so I would go and check The Machinist making sure they were in parts spec making sure that what they were seeing was correct I would do liquid penetrant and mag inspection I’m not totally ignorant when it comes to doing CNC stuff but I’ve never done it personally.
And this is not directed at you Ryan but making somebody feel stupid because they ask a question and because they interpreted what you said incorrectly makes me not even want to be on here I’d rather just figure it out on my own because there has been a couple of rude and distasteful comments and I just have let them pass but then it ends up showing when I’m making a post and people say you need to be more patient.
whenever I’m teaching somebody or I’m teaching my kids I have to be patient because they don’t know what I’m trying to show them but I’m never rude I’m never disrespectful I encourage them without basically making them feel like it’s an uphill battle…
Thank Ryan for all of your advice thank you for your patience and guidance
The forums are moderated and the users self-moderate, so some form of that has happened in this thread.
I did see the original form posts, and I appreciate your clarification.
Folks here are generally very helpful to in providing community support and we want you as a community member to succeed.
The community also correctly points out that you have a very ambitious set of goals.
You absolutely can get where you want to be.
It’s going to take a lot of work on your part.
We’re also protective of the community at large and will point out deficits or potential issues- like some of what was discussed in those posts that are not in the forums any more.
As a bit of background: Part of why we generally don’t do PM or out-of-band support is because the rest of the community can’t participate and learn from it.
PM requests are a trigger for many of us. Not you, but for example others have asked me to provide them direct support and are really shocked when I quote a three-figure hourly rate for such support.
I also can’t and won’t accept any confidentiality or restrictions on the support I provide here in the forums. This again has probably triggered a bunch of our personal red flags.
I’ll take you at face value that there’s no nefarious intent.
Keep working towards your goal, keep posting, keep a positive attitude, and you’ll have a fighting chance of success. We’ll keep helping you.
I hope you don’t feel disrespected.
I believe none of us wants to show you any of that.
If you do, I offer that it isn’t my intent and I think generally that’s true for the community.
I also hope you understand why this thread has caused some responses as you’ve seen.
The tone of this entire thread is bothersome to me. it is unlike any other threads we have here.
I very rarely delete anything, maybe 1a year, more recently, but I deleted that post and me and the posted had a chat about it.
@Fragmintz311 I recommend you start a new thread so this whole thing can just fade away. You are up and running, a new thread with the new direction should get everyone back in the right frame of mind. The previously 211 posts do not have anything to do with 3D carving anyway.
Lets all start fresh and have fun in the next one.
I agree…
The email I got from another member… Really bothered me
I was one of the ones that said “have some patience”, but that was directed only at the point where you made a comment wanting to go live and being surprised that didn’t exist here.
It was only meant in the context of being patient with the process of getting help in the forum.
I have purposefully stayed out of this thread mostly because I have never built a MPCNC and can offer little help that I could 100% say I knew was right.
I agree with Ryan.
I can assure you no one here had any intent to try to make you feel stupid.
Some of the issues at the beginning of thread were because of the multiple account issue, and a few times there were misunderstandings on both sides with the clarity of statements.
If you want to get the best use out of forum like this, there are a few things to keep in mind:
-
This forum is built with people from all over the world. Not all are native English speakers. Keeping posts as concise and clear as possible will go a long way to increasing the quality of response you get.
-
We are all over the world. We all have jobs, and operate in a wide range of time zones. Sometimes you will get a response in 2 minutes, sometimes it will take many hours. Some days are different than others, but, in general, it is pretty active here.
-
Remote support is difficult. The more pictures/videos you can use to help describe a problem, the faster the solution will generally come.
You can delete if wanted… I have no issue with that
I have been reading, your issues are resolved apparently, now make that machine produce chips, get it dirty. A lot of messages shouldn’t be even here. (Not commenting on them). Im so glad your machine moves as intended. 3d carving, i ran a job one day with my old lr2 and never touched again.
Happy holidays!
Statement: I know that the documentation states estlcam.
I have the library for fusion. Been playing with the ESTLCAM interface. I don’t like easel…carvceco seems interesting
Question: what other cam software can we use? Or does it come down to the G-Code? Suggestions?
At the moment, I think EstlCAM is the easiest to learn. (probably a popular opinion here)
Some people like Kiri:Moto, but I’ve never tried it.
Fusion is much, much more complicated for CAM than EstlCAM is.
I haven’t tried any of the other commercial options (many of us haven’t) because the price is too high for hobby users
as long as the gcode being generated is “post processed” to match your firmware, any cam software should work. If you use marlin, use the marlin post processor, if you use FluidNC, use the GRBL post processor. I think the one in Fusion for GRBL is the flyfisher post processor, though that may be for Marlin. Someone else can elaborate on that. Each firmware may handle curves or relative/absolute coordinates differently and that is likely only one of the concerns. As long as you get that part right, the rest of it is somewhat preference based.
Yeah, I’ve noticed. I’m good infusion but learning how to do the setups and all the other stuff infusion is a lot more complicated I do agree…
Cool!!!
