Forum update, new menu, options

We are now running, Discourse 3.0.0.

With this came new options for the

and Notifications.

You can edit what is shown by going to your profile preferences and “sidebar”. The “everything” button seems to be the same as the previous “latest” button.

Oooh - I see a live chat option! Is it available here at v1? I know I’ve been nagging about the Discord-server a long while back. I feel a little sorry about that, since I haven’t spent much time there in years. (the reason for this is that I’ve mostly used Discord for gaming, and ATM I’m gaming dissapointingly little). I think it would be easier to engange in a chat if it was right here on the forum. What do you think?

I’m still very hesitant to put a chat in the forums. I get a lot of people asking me questions in private and I send them public.

People will want real time answers and we will lose a ton of content, I feel.

Indeed, I hear you. I wasn’t thinking of private chats, but public channels. But I’ll stay away from any strong opinions this time

I thought about trying it, I just am not sure what is to be gained from it. I only see downsides? The shop has realtime chat features as well, That I could see helping someone with a quick question but 90% of the emails I get from the shop are “what do I need for a full kit”. Not something I want to address in Chat.

The only time I have ever used chat is when a product does not have support forums. So obviously I am biased by my preferences.

I just want to hang out and drink a beer with friendly people :innocent: my wife has a handcrafts club where she can meet actual people and discuss projects and techniques. While all I’ve got is you guys

I like having a long living record of our debugging and troubleshooting. A lot of people want the answer right now, amd having a record to look through really helps.

I have in my profile that I won’t help in private, but I get a request about once per week from someone who DMs me a question. I won’t answer, because I want the record for future users to be public.

I would be happy to chat sometime, but not most of the time, and almost never for troubleshooting. Maybe there could be a better format for that? Maybe someone takes notes on interesting cnc related stuff they see (in the forums, or not) (v1 related, or not) and we can have an occasional livestream/chat about it? I am not up to date on the best way to do that.

During covid, I was dreaming of inviting you to a hangout, hybrid video-voice-chat something something. But I never got to it. And now life’s more stressful again. And I couldn’t figure out a suitable hour of day!

We are good Bjorn, we should be nearly in the same time zone. Those across the pond though with their 13.5 time zones are a major problem. Discord can do video calls, I don’t know how many people it supports though.

In regards to the live chat option, I’ve noticed on other Discourse forums theres a “whos online” list in the site header with everyones avatar that is currently active.

That worries me that those of us that are usually online will get more DM’s asking for help directly.

Just to be clear, I have no problem telling people, “no” when they DM me. If there are features that make people more excited to interact with each other, don’t worry about me.

I like anything that opens up conversation and allows for “meaningful” dialog. However, with that said, it is essential to all who venture down this DIY path, especially in the CNC arena, to learn as much about the hobby before embarking so that the questions raised have not already been asked. This is a great community created by Ryan, and it can only get better. Thanks to all!!!

I don’t mind drinking and chatting at 7AM CST.

Ooh - the kids would still be at school by then! Hm, maybe we should set up a vote to see what hours have the most people? Maybe I should start drinking mid-day? I’ve heard that it can be quite enjoyable, but I think if I do it regulary, people will start to worry…

I would need to set an alarm and I’d be there with a cup of coffee. I wouldn’t do that every day, but I like early mornings every once in a while.

I’m on mountain, so it is 6am here.

5am my time, maybe I can relive my wild days and pull an all nighter, clutching my last bud light desperately trying to stay awake. Or you know get up a bit early and a large cup of coffee,
