Everything stopped working!

Mpcnc with skr board, built in the last month. LCD has been removed and I am directly plugged into my computer. Initial tests (with LCD) worked fine except for some end stop issues that were fixed. Got as far as printing the crown with no problems. Tried to get dirty by milling a 10 inch square with an 8 inch hole. When I went to run the Gcode in repetier everything stopped moving. Now I can’t even use the manual mode in repetier to move any of the axis’s.

Used Bob’s cnc/cam to generate the gcode. When I loaded it into Repetier I got a m20-unrecognized error. Since then …….nothing. I tried reloading Repetier in case it was corrupted but it didn’t help. At this point I am at a loss on my next step. Firmware corrupted?

A few instances of a SKR Pro board losing the firmware, and sometimes the bootloader as well, have come across the forum, but I would not start there in troubleshooting your problem.

Start by verifying that your board has power for all three voltage systems (12V/24V, 5V, and 3.3V). I’ve highlighted the LEDs you want to examine in yellow in this image:

If the LEDs show power to all three systems, the next step is to attempt to send a command to the board. Assuming you are connecting to the board, use the Manual Control tab and G-Code edit field in Repetier-Host to send commands to your board. Try an M115 (firmware info) and see what you get back.

If you can connect and send info, but the board is still not responding, post back the exact info (or a screenshot) of what is reported by Repetier-Host.

All three LED’s are lit. I have also sent a m119 to the board and got a response. Shown below is the result of a m115. Still no movement when I try to use the Repetier controls.

Based on this line, your board not only responded, but it verified that you have the right firmware on the board, so this is not a firmware issue. The next thing to check is the fuses. There are three fuses on the board. I’m not sure which fuse is for the motor rail, but I’d guess the blue one. I’d check both the blue and the red one visually, and if you don’t find anything, by multimeter.

If a fuse is blown, then you should look for the problem that blew the fuse before replacing it and firing up the board. My primary suspect would be a short in the stepper motor wiring.

I fixed it. Rookie mistake!

I was trying to set x, y and z to 0 so that I could test the gcode by…”air” printing prior to actually milling a board. I apparently issue a “m” command rather than a “g” setting the stepper motors all to 0. I had been doing some calibration work on my 3d printer earlier and I guess i was in a rut with the “m” command. I even saved it!

I discovered my error at 4 am this morning when I couldn’t sleep and was looking at a list of the various commands. When I saw that both g and m had a 92 extension I realized my error. I have changed all three axis to a value of 80 (they were at 0) and they are moving just fine (a number from my 3d printer) . Now all I need to know is what value should they be set at?'’

I would never have guessed the M92 as the root of your problem. I’m glad you tracked it down. Without an M500, these settings would not have been saved, so cycling the board would have returned the steps per unit to the previous values.

Cycling the board is no longer an option…

I have them all set at 80. What should they be set at? Does the manufacturer set them at a standard value?

What I mean by cycling the board, is turning the board off and then back on. When you set firmware values using g-code (or in this case an ‘M’ code), you must follow it with an M500 to save that setting. If you don’t, then the setting is lost when the board is turned off.

Turn your board off and back on, then send it a M92 with no parameters. This will tell you the current steps per mm.

If needed, you can send an M502 followed by an M500 to reset the board back to the original V1 settings in the firmware.

You should not need it given the steps I outline above, but here is the line in the SKR Pro Marlin firmware that sets the default steps per mm:

#define DEFAULT_AXIS_STEPS_PER_UNIT { 100, 100, 400 } 

So it is 100 for X and Y and 400 for Z. This is for the V1 firmware for the SKR Pro board running the
TMC2209 stepper drivers. Other boards running different stepper drivers may have other values.
