Dimmer switch not working

I’m not a complete moron, incomolete probably.

Anyway grabbed a dimmer switch and wired it up, intersected the hot wire, tested it, and I only get full speed on my 660 and various other tools and stuff around the shop. Are there rotary dimmers that dont use the triac method? What could this be a symptom of?

Any help would be appreciated.

If you are looking for a general solution, search for “router speed controller,” and you will find products at many price points down to $17. As for a dimmer, look for a fan speed controller. I’m guessing prices will be in the same range as the router speed controller for fan controllers that will handle 5 amps or more.

The triac should work on the 660. The dumb dimmer was the first thing we used on the mpcnc.

Harbor freight offers a pretty cheap speed control and it has the advantage of not having to cut any AC wires.

I searched out the Harbor Freight speed control before I posted, and I could no longer find it. I’m assuming they no longer sell it. I did find one on Amazon that looks visually identical to the one that Harbor Freight was selling for $17.

Bummer.

yea the HF is just a low grad triac as well. Interestingly, the HF circuit only actuates on one side of the AC wave…

I already cut the wires lol, so im gonna go try a different dimmer. I’m starting to think this one has some “magic” inside that the walmart cheap-o’s wont. Will know by tonight.

So the cheap-o from walmart works like a champ. Maybe when i get ahead of some of my orders i’ll pop the other one open to see what magic inside is preventing it from working.
