Can you leave USB plugged in safely?

I have my machine setup on a raspberry pi right now, can I leave the USB cable connected when I turn off the 12V power supply? I’m concerned that the rambo board will only be partially powered.

I do this with my 3d printer and it’s fine :expressionless:

Thanks,

Charles.

Hi Charles. I cannot say if it is save or not but for my 3d printer I just put a tiny bit of electrical tape over the contact in the USB plug so that it doesn’t deliver any power to the board. Works fine so far.

Interesting solution, thanks for sharing!

I do. I have a RaspberryPi plugged into my mainboard for remote control and the like. Whether the Pi is turned on depends on whether I need it, but it is always plugged in, and I’ve never had an issue.

It should be fine. The usb doesn’t power the motors and on the rambos doesn’t even power the microcontroller or screen.

If it was a ramps, you might be concerned with drawing too much power through the USB, as it might mess with the pi. But I bet even that is fine.
