CAD to inkscape?

I tried for literally hours today and could not find a workflow to get an easily editable vector file from a CAD drawing.

I was just trying to get color details in for printing.

I can export my drawings as pdf, ai, dxf (splines and poly lines) and all I ever get are line segments that I can not join any way other than one at a time. fine for a small file maybe but thousands of nodes is not happening one at a time.

I saw my old post from years back making the stamp, I hit the same roadblock and just used the segments as cut lines, but now I need to use color fills.

Am I missing something?

I’m wondering if this extension might be helpful to you. It primarily about getting different vector path colors that can be made into different settings with a laser. I’ll poke around more to see if it has the fill property you were looking for.

Yes, you can set it for this. Here is video intro:

The output in generally an SVG and doesn’t have all the spline issues.

Maybe you should just take a screenshot and import it

Sorry, I don’t have a legit answer.

You’d be surprised how often that seems to be the answer for me.

I was trying to get a dxf export of a part with dimensions to give to a friend. Looks like F360 doesn’t include dimensions when you export dxf.

I ended up just screen grabbing the drawing from F360 and sending him a png.

Kinda odd, I guess I need to learn how to work with dimensions in a vector program. I have always used offset lines and center lines but dimensions always seem super wonky. I spent about an hour in CAD, oddly enough most of that was dealing with importing and moving vector logos around. Then I spent several hours trying to Get the CAD back to the Vector. It sucks because it is sooooo close. I have nodes I can move and they are all in the right place. I can stroke and un-stroke them, but they are not connected so no fill. There is no selecting all and fusing overlapping points. The CAD export has "fuse points within X distance, and make poly lines but inkscape chokes if you use that.

I think my statement was confusing…

What I meant was, exporting the dxf didn’t include the visual text of the dimensions in it. Just the lines of the part.

Like this:

Yeah to include the dims you need to make a drawing and from there you can export your drawing as a PDF if you want them. Best you can get with a DXF is some center lines I believe.

Oh. Nice. I didn’t have time to mess with it the other day, so ended up doing the screen grab. I’ll have to play with the drawing stuff.

Drawing are an art form I used to thoroughly enjoy. You can be as detailed and organized as you want…pretty cool.

I’ve done a ton of them in autocad and inventor. Just haven’t looked for it in F360 yet.
