Hi everyone,
I’m looking for a suitable laser for my MPCNC. It should be able to cut thin wood (e.g., 3mm plywood) and also work well for engraving.
Does anyone have recommendations for power (watts), brands, or modules that are compatible with the MPCNC with the SKR Pro Board?
Thanks for your tips!
I had the Ortur 10W LU2 Laser working pretty well on my MPCNC. It has an interface board, but if you’re handy with wiring, it’s pretty easy to wire directly to either the SKR Pro or the Jackpot. There are 5 wires. 2 are ground, 2 are 24V, and 1 is data to your control board.
I bring 24V up from a larger power supply (not any of the kits from V1E shop) into some multi-WAGOs. Then take a ground to both the board and the laser so it’s common. 24V is similar. The data line is single, so I just terminated it with a single DuPont.
The only thing I didn’t like about using it on the MPCNC was the hassle of removing the router and installing the laser. (Really it was just that the router was so tight in the mount that getting it out, then eventually replacing it were a pain.) I also didn’t have a proper honeycomb at the time, so I’d definitely recommend that as well for through cuts. (I was using a dollar store cookie sheet with a baking rack which was messy.)
I was cutting 1/8" baltic birch with it. There’s some scorching, and it takes multiple passes to get it all the way through.
FWIW - it’s at least as important to ensure your control setup works with Lightburn. Amazing software, especially for the price.
EDIT: Can’t say this is the “best.” As a balance of price and performance, I was happy with it.
