I recently found Pixelfed which is a great alternative to Instagram if one does not want to support the big players but rather wants to join an independently hosted network without ads, hosted by the community and decentralised, similar to Mastodon, which makes it harder or near impossible to buy out in the future.
The experience with Twitter shows that a social network can turn sour pretty quickly if in the wrong hands.
The downside is that it is nearly not as lively as Instagram, but if no one makes a change, nothing is going to change. So I invite you to join the Pixelfediverse and become my first followers (Philipp (@HaWiWe@pixelfed.de) - Pixelfed).
I’d love to see this community grow in different places, on unbeaten paths, where we can hopefully be part of a large maker community in a few years.
Hmm, weird. Maybe the German server is blocking other IPs? You can try to find a server on the official page Pixelfed Server Directory, they are all interconnected anyway, so you can join the NA one.
Cool. I used mastodon for a while. But it mostly got quiet. Bluesky also worked for me for a while but honestly, the algorithm twitter used (before the takeover) was doing a very good job of keeping me addicted and mastodon and bluesky haven’t kept me interested as much.
But I will happily try pixelfed. These things need to reach critical mass to work.
I have a similar problem. I can not register myself. It tells that a verification mail was sent, but I didn’t receive the mail. I will try again in the afternoon
From a different server this is your profile. If I click on that gear I have to hit view remote profile to see your posts.
Seems like this might still be getting sorted out. Groups are not available on my server yet, search says it has not rolled out everywhere yet.
In my feed I do not see you posts unless I hit “global feed” each time. Seems odd my feed is not made up of people I follow, only people I follow on my own server.
I guess the US one is your main?
