For Fathers Day last year… or maybe the year before I don’t know… I got a bug’a’salt.

Now we’re coming into shooting season I thought I could make something instead of it just laying around.

So inspired by Starship troopers

I downloaded a ‘Federation’ logo and brought it into lightburn, image traced and added suitably futuristic text. Used the ‘Deform’ tool skew it a bit to match the top line. I also added a bit of a pocket for a 3D printed bracket Bug-A-Salt MK3 wall mount / holder by Brad | Download free STL model | Printables.com

Saved out of lightburn as a dxf and into estlcam for creating the toolpaths

24mm/s 3mm DoC on single flute 1/8 endmill.

I did the letters an an engrave (using the v14 45 degree v bit).

by then the bracket had finished printing, so i could put them together with only the bareset tickle with a sanding block round the edges to remove the fluff.

Painted and ready to hang. The picture doesn’t show it well but its a silver/gold finish. A couple od the letters are a bit wonky in the corners but if I’m honest I don’t think I specified a depth for the carve so thats probably on me. (Thats what these tests are for). All done, downloading to painting, in less than 2 hrs.

I like it, It came out good.

How does the gun actually work? Thinking about getting one for my brother’s birthday. I like the sign and holder, very well done.

Theres a small hopper on top you fill with regular table salt, pump to load it and compress the spring then fire. Shoots a fairly tight spray good for about a metre maybe a bit more.

Because it’s just salt it’s not toxic and I’ve shot myself to see and it’s not sore at all.

But surprisingly effective and definitely good fun.

Big wasps sometimes take more than one shot and perhaps a coup de grace.

It’s annoying as all get out to get shot by it repeatedly though

A friends house is next to some fields and late summer they get a ridiculous number of flies. But it’s summer and they’ve got a great pool so they’re always out there enjoying it. They had two of the salt guns and anytime we weren’t in the pool they were constantly shooting at flies.

But they had terrible aim so it was pretty common for anyone sitting around the table to get shot in the foot :rage:

And honestly…those flies were so crazy it would take 3-4 shots to take them out for good even at just a few inches range. Shooting them from a few feet away would just daze them for a few seconds at best. It was fun…but not overly effective.

Just use course salt

Rock salt works best.
