Worth buying dedicated low RPM router? Or should I stick with DWP611

Hello all, long-time admirer, first-time poster.

I’m in the final stages of a build of a 4’x8’ LR4, built around my only router, and I’m realizing that it would be quite useful to pick up a second “workshop” router for misc tasks, or even just for flush trimming off those pesky tabs.

I’m running the DeWalt 611 currently, seems like a great little machine. In many ways it would be ideal to just keep it in the machine while I pick up a new cordless router for those misc tasks. On the other hand, I’ve been learning the importance of low RPMs with these hobbyist cnc machines, and am very jealous of the Makita 700 series’ ability to drop all the way to 10k RPM.

Ultimately the tradeoffs are mine to judge, but, to help me weigh the options: just how useful is being able to slow to those down the extra 5k? Do you Makita users end up speeding it up in practice anyways? Is it a few dollars in burned-up bits a year? Will it be easier to get good surfaces with a slower router?

Welcome aboard! I’ll have to let someone with more experience help you out with router speed. Best of luck

I used a router speed controller on my Dewalt with no issues at all.

(And welcome! This is hands down, the most supportive forum I’ve ever encountered in my life! You’ll love it here.)

The kobalt router is cheap money compared to others out there and this group had input in the design. I love my milwaukee cordless but no way would i want it tied up by this machine.

Edit… i can’t find that one on their app. Did lowes stop making that one?

Yep.

This is the best deal I’m aware of at the moment. They are clearing out the ER11 version of their router.

It died a quick death. I think it was in the shelf for 2 or 3 months.

I use a bauer from harbor freight. It works well but judging by how hot the collet gets, i don’t think it will be a long lasting tool. Its the only tool i paid for the extended warranty and plan on swapping it out before the end no matter what.

I also use the Bauer from harbor freight, was lucky enough to catch it when they were on sale for $30, so I bought 2. Works great, does get a little hot like someone else mentioned, but hasn’t died on me yet. It is also definitely worth it to have the router dedicated to the lowrider, and have another one loose for general projects, as it can be a pain to have to take it in and out, plus figuring out the wiring situation.

Yep, they are. Got 2 of them for my builds, they are wayyyy silent :no_bell: much more than my dewalts (not as much as my wc spindle ) they cone with 2 pairs of extra brushes 1/4" and 1/8" collets, single nut. It uses standard er11 collets so you can buy as many replacements/sizes you want and comes with the pair of wrenches
