What Size LR4 to CNC guitar bodies and necks?

Hello All,

It’s been a while since I’ve checked in and posted. So, I have a 2nd LR4 kit sitting in my shop and I would like to build one dedicated to guitar building. What size table would you recommend? Shorter X or shorter Y? and why…. thanks!

Always shorter X, because stiffness.

I’ll reiterate.shorter X, and in fact likely.the width of the guitar.bodies with minimal extra. The shorter the X span the stiffer the machine will be. For my purposes, a 25” X is excellent, and deals.with my expected.use cases, plus I have a larger.machine, too, so, it’s all good. The 25×49” LR4 does the vast majority of my CNC work.

Depth might be a different story. The stock depth may be OK, with a drop table (or.raised.rails) You want the LR to ride as low as.possible to the rails,. Again for.stiffness, so if you’re looking at (for.wxample).2” thick guitar.bodies, then dripping the spoil board 2” below the rails.is likely a good idea

I’m also looking at building an LR4 to build custom guitars and basses. I have a Shapeoko 3 XL that has the footprint to handle guitar bodies and guitar necks, but a bass neck is too long and that’s what I want to build first.

I’m planning on a 24” X by 48” Y build, and then swapping X and Y as outlined by Doug Joseph elsewhere on the forum. While not absolutely necessary I like designing along the X axis in Fusion 360 which make my longer design axis the X dimension.

I considered going 60” on the Y/future X so that I could do full through the body necks on a bass, but if I ever get to that I can just rework my 48” rail.

I’m hoping to build on a big piece of 3/4” or 1” MDF that will rest on my table saw when in use, and then I can lean it against a nearby wall when it’s not being used. My table saw is setup with a 52” rip capacity, so I have plenty of surface on which to rest the LR4 “slab”

I do too, but with it being trivial to rotate the drawing in CAM, the extra work for swapping the machine around is too much bother for me.
